The Renaissance comes alive in the historic center of Thiene
Thiene 1492 celebrates a decisive moment in the history of Thiene, in the province of Vicenza: on October 6, 1492, the city obtained from the Republic of Venice, through Doge Agostino Barbarigo, the concession of the Free Market without duties, the first in the entire Vicenza province. A commercial network already active since the 13th century, it made Thiene a crossroads of trade in the Alto Vicentino region.
To commemorate that privilege, every October the historic center comes alive with stalls of merchants and artisans, flavors, arts, and crafts of the 16th century. The streets and squares host Renaissance music and dance performances, recreational activities, jesters, and street artists, with costumed figures portraying nobles, merchants, vendors, artisans, and commoners.
The event follows an alternating format: in odd-numbered years, the complete Historical Reenactment takes place, with hundreds of participants, parades, and encampments; in even-numbered years — like 2026 — the protagonist is the European Renaissance Market, with about 150 exhibitors transforming Thiene into a grand Renaissance emporium.
The event is organized by A.P.S. Amici di Thiene, which has been dedicated to enhancing the city's historical heritage for years, involving hundreds of volunteers. It has become one of the most recognizable cultural events of the Vicenza autumn.
In 2026, an even-numbered year, Thiene 1492 will be held in its European Renaissance Market format: the historic center will host approximately 150 exhibitors, including merchants and artisans, accompanied by music and dance performances, public activities, and participants in 16th-century attire. The event traditionally takes place on the first weekend of October, around the anniversary of the Free Market concession granted on October 6, 1492.
The historic center of Thiene will host:
The precise dates (first weekend of October) and opening hours will be published by A.P.S. Amici di Thiene and the Municipality of Thiene in the preceding weeks. The grand Historical Reenactment with hundreds of participants will return in odd-numbered years.
