The Arbëreshë Epiphany celebrated according to the Greek-Byzantine rite, featuring liturgy, traditional costumes, and the blessing of the waters.
The Theophany of Piana degli Albanesi is one of the most evocative religious celebrations in Sicily. It takes place every year on January 6th in the town of Piana degli Albanesi, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, the heart of the island's Arbëreshë community. The term "Theophany" comes from Greek and means "manifestation of God": the feast commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River and the descent of the Holy Spirit, according to the Byzantine liturgical calendar.
Piana degli Albanesi was founded at the end of the 15th century by groups of Albanian refugees who arrived in Sicily following the death of the national hero Skanderbeg and the Ottoman advance in the Balkans. The town's foundation was officially established in 1488. Five centuries later, the community still preserves its language, songs, costumes, and above all, the Greek-Byzantine rite: the town is the seat of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, a jurisdiction of the Italo-Albanian Church that unites the Arbëreshë of Sicily.
The day begins at 10:30 AM with the solemn Pontifical Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of San Demetrio Megalomartire, presided over by the Eparch. Afterward, a procession winds its way from the cathedral to the monumental Fontana dei Tre Cannoli in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. Here, the great blessing of the waters takes place: the bishop immerses a wooden cross three times, accompanied by a three-candle candelabra and a sprig of rue, while the liturgical chant "Në Jordan" resonates.
The most anticipated moment is the flight of the dove: a white bird is released from the roof of the Church of the Madonna dell'Odigitria toward the fountain, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit during Christ's baptism. At the end of the ceremony, blessed oranges are distributed to the faithful—a sign of nature's rebirth after winter—carried in baskets by young women in traditional dress.
The Theophany is a rare opportunity to witness a living Eastern rite in the heart of Sicily, in a town that has managed to preserve its linguistic, religious, and cultural identity for over five centuries. A journey into Arbëreshë memory, just a few kilometers from Palermo, amidst faith, history, and beauty.
The 2026 Theophany renewed the ancient Greek-Byzantine rite of the Arbëreshë community once again this year. At 10:30 AM, the Pontifical Divine Liturgy, presided over by the Eparch at the Cathedral of San Demetrio Megalomartire, began the festivities. Afterward, the procession featuring religious and civil authorities and women in traditional costumes reached the Fontana dei Tre Cannoli in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
The blessing of the waters took place here with the immersion of the cross, while the white dove descended from the roof of the Church of the Madonna dell'Odigitria to symbolize the Holy Spirit. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of blessed oranges to the faithful.
Piana degli Albanesi is located about 30 km from Palermo. By car: take the A19 motorway, exit at Villabate, then follow the SS624 and SP5 toward Piana degli Albanesi. By train: arrive at Palermo Centrale station and take the AST bus to the town. Nearest airport: Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (Punta Raisi).
The celebration takes place on January 6th from approximately 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The Divine Liturgy is held at the Cathedral of San Demetrio, and the blessing of the waters at the Fontana dei Tre Cannoli in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. The event is free to attend.
Arrive early to secure a spot in the square to watch the flight of the dove. Dress in layers: in January, the mountain climate can be chilly. Take the opportunity to taste typical Arbëreshë sweets at local pastry shops.
