About Sant'Anna Festival

The Sant'Anna Festival is the patronal feast of Pioppo, a district of Monreale in the province of Palermo, celebrated every July in honor of Saint Anne, the patron saint and "matriarch" of the village. Six days of faith, tradition, and entertainment culminate in a solemn procession of the statue through the streets, accompanied by illuminations, a marching band, and fireworks. A deeply felt community event organized by the Sant'Anna Parish.

The patronal feast of Pioppo

The Sant'Anna Festival is the main religious and civic event in Pioppo, a district of the Municipality of Monreale, in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Every year, in the second half of July, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, venerated as the "village matriarch," in a celebration that weaves together deep devotion, popular traditions, and shared festivities.

Organized by the Sant'Anna Parish of Pioppo, the festival spans several days, reaching its peak on July 26th, the solemnity of Saints Joachim and Anne. The village streets light up with festive illuminations, and every evening the sky is brightened by fireworks, while a marching band provides the soundtrack for the most solemn days.

Between faith and tradition

The spiritual journey leading up to the festival is marked by the novena, with the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass celebrated in the Church of Sant'Anna in the days preceding the feast. A particularly evocative moment is the Sant'Anna pilgrim, which brings prayer to the various squares and districts of the village.

The heart of the festival is the procession of the saint's statue, carried on a vara (float) through the streets of Pioppo amidst a sea of faithful, the notes of the band, and fireworks. The day of the solemnity begins at dawn with the alborata (morning wake-up call) and the festive ringing of bells, followed by a solemn Mass and the act of entrustment by civil authorities, concluding with the evening procession.

Entertainment and community

Alongside the liturgical program, the festival offers a rich calendar of civic events: gastronomic evenings featuring local desserts, cabaret shows, outdoor cinema screenings, music nights, DJ sets, water games, and sports tournaments for the youth. It is a formula that unites generations and renews the bond between Pioppo and its patron saint every year.

The Sant'Anna Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of patronal feasts in the Monreale area and the Palermo hinterland, serving as a gathering point for residents and those originally from Pioppo who return to the village specifically for these days of celebration.
