About The Treasures of Buccheri

Every autumn, the village of Buccheri, the highest in the Iblei Mountains in the province of Syracuse, opens its streets for "The Treasures of Buccheri - Best Culinary Destination". A weekend dedicated to the food, wine, landscape, and artistic excellence of the village: extra virgin olive oil, mushrooms, cheeses, homemade bread, traditional sweets, and Iblean cuisine. Between the mycological exhibition, guided tours of Baroque churches, forest hikes, and conferences, it is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic and little-known corner of Sicily.

A journey through the flavors of the highest village in the Iblei Mountains

The Treasures of Buccheri - Best Culinary Destination is the autumn event that the Municipality of Buccheri, a small village in the province of Syracuse, dedicates to its food, wine, landscape, and artistic excellence. Perched at an altitude of approximately 820 meters on the slopes of Monte Lauro, the highest point in the province, Buccheri is the highest village in the Iblei Mountains and is part of that hidden treasure of south-eastern Sicily that also includes the Baroque of Palazzolo Acreide and the open-air museum of Buscemi.

Gastronomic excellence

For two days, the streets of the historic center come alive with authentic aromas, colors, and flavors thanks to the culinary art of local producers. Participating restaurants, trattorias, and venues offer the best of Iblean tradition:

  • Extra virgin olive oil, the territory's flagship product, with visits to processing facilities
  • Mushrooms from the Iblei woods, the stars of tastings and the mycological exhibition
  • Homemade bread, cheeses, and PAT products (Traditional Agri-food Products)
  • Traditional sweets and meat-based dishes, olive pรขtรฉ, and sun-dried tomatoes

Culture, nature, and tradition

Beyond the culinary aspect, the event is an invitation to discover the village's heritage. Among the most anticipated initiatives is the Mycological Exhibition, a journey into the world of mushrooms guided by mycological experts to discover local species. The historic churches of Buccheri, such as Santa Maria Maddalena and Sant'Antonio, open their doors for guided tours of their architectural and artistic treasures.

The program also includes nature hikes through woods, springs, and panoramic views, urban trekking in the historic center, visits to the evocative ice houses (neviere) from which the ancient tradition of Sicilian granita originates, and conferences on local themes. Buccheri, recognized as a "Best Culinary Destination", thus positions itself as a true oasis of well-being immersed in the biodiversity and history of the Iblei.

A village to experience all year round

The autumn appointment of The Treasures of Buccheri is part of a calendar of events that keeps the village alive throughout the year, from the medieval MedFest that brings the castle ruins to life every August, to summer initiatives for families. Visiting Buccheri during this event means connecting with the most authentic Sicily, that of the small villages in the province of Syracuse where tradition, taste, and hospitality blend together.
