The devotional festival of Lercara Friddi featuring votive breads, lavishly set tables, and the re-enactment of the Holy Family

In Lercara Friddi, in the heart of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, the Saint Joseph festival is one of the most deeply rooted events in the Sicilian popular calendar. As the husband of the Virgin Mary and the patron saint of the poor and the destitute, the saint is celebrated around the liturgical date of March 19th with an event that weaves together devotion, traditional gastronomy, and a profound sense of community.
The heart of the festival lies in the famous tavolate: immense tables covered with fine lace and expertly embroidered cloths, laden with all kinds of food and set with devotion by confraternities, local associations, and town families. They are a gesture of faith and gratitude toward the saint, with images of the Holy Family taking center stage.
One of the most evocative moments is the re-enactment of the Holy Family's journey: throughout the day, preceded by the joyful roll of drums and accompanied by characters in period costumes, the protagonists—with Mary riding a donkey—visit the tables set up in the historic center, recreating the search for shelter and the value of hospitality.
The festival is more than just a banquet: prayers and folk songs echo around the tables through the town's streets, creating an atmosphere of deep spirituality. A portion of the food and the numerous donations collected are delivered to the local Caritas for distribution among the neediest families, keeping alive the spirit of charity and sharing that is the true meaning of devotion to Saint Joseph.
Promoted by the Municipality of Lercara Friddi, the event aims to perpetuate, in the age of globalization, the devotional traditions handed down from generation to generation. For those visiting the province of Palermo in spring, the Tavolate di San Giuseppe offer an authentic glimpse into the deepest heart of Sicily, where faith becomes cuisine, community, and collective memory.
The 2026 Tavolate di San Giuseppe in Lercara Friddi are expected, according to tradition, around March 19th, the liturgical feast of the saint. At the moment, the precise dates and the detailed program have not yet been published by the Municipality of Lercara Friddi.
As every year, the setting up of votive tables in the churches and courtyards of the historic center is expected, with votive breads, traditional sweets, and seasonal vegetables, accompanied by prayers, folk songs, and the charitable collection of food offerings for needy families. Information will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
