The devotional ritual of the Tables across Minervino di Lecce, Cocumola, and Specchia Gallone
The Tables of Saint Joseph are one of the most evocative devotional rituals in Salento, finding one of their most authentic expressions in Minervino di Lecce, a small town in the Province of Lecce, Puglia. Every year, around March 19th, the liturgical feast of Saint Joseph, families who have received a grace or are renewing a vow set up tavole (tables) in their homes: large banquets laden with votive dishes, opened free of charge to visitors and pilgrims as a sign of hospitality and sharing.
For several years, this tradition has been enhanced by the Divine Villages among Saints, Fairy Tales, and Megaliths project, promoted by the Municipality of Minervino di Lecce in partnership with the Mercatino del Gusto association. The project extends the festival beyond the historic center of Minervino, involving the hamlets of Cocumola and Specchia Gallone, and weaves together popular devotion, food and wine culture, and the rediscovery of the territory, including megaliths, dolmens, and the rural landscapes of lower Salento. The initiative is sponsored by the Puglia Region, the Ministry of Culture, and the Province of Lecce, with support linked to European funds.
The traditional table is a true narrative of faith and peasant cuisine: it is symbolically composed of numerous courses dedicated to the saints, with ritual braided bread, fennel, and oranges at the center. The signature dish is massa di San Giuseppe, a handmade pasta seasoned with chickpeas; alongside it are vermicelli and fried fish, lampascioni, rapini and chickpeas, pittule, bread, oil, fennel, and purceddhuzzi pastries. All ingredients are locally sourced, following the seasonality and sobriety of the Salento farming tradition.
The event is not just about gastronomy: it opens with the Pannikia, the ancient Byzantine-rite bread blessing, and continues with conferences dedicated to the meaning of the feast — exploring ritual, food, and the culture of legality — as well as cooking workshops, literary moments, and convivial gatherings. The heart of the event is the culinary trail that connects Minervino, Cocumola, and Specchia Gallone with various tasting stations located throughout the area, where one can savor votive dishes while walking among churches, courtyards, and open homes.
The Tables of Saint Joseph represent a precious intangible heritage of Salento, Puglia: a community ritual that unites the sacred dimension with the spirit of giving and hospitality. In Minervino di Lecce, this tradition, guarded by families and supported by local associations, parishes, and the Municipality, continues to attract visitors from all over Salento, offering a rare experience of authenticity and shared memory.
The 2026 edition of the Tables of Saint Joseph was held from March 15 to 19 in Minervino di Lecce, Cocumola, and Specchia Gallone, promoted by the Municipality and the Mercatino del Gusto association, with the patronage of the Puglia Region, the Ministry of Culture, and the Province of Lecce.
Along the route, eight tasting stations offered votive dishes: massa di San Giuseppe, vermicelli and fried fish, lampascioni, rapini and chickpeas, pittule, bread, oil, fennel, and purceddhuzzi. A portion of the food was donated to Caritas and local charitable associations.
