The candlelit village on the night closest to the summer solstice
The Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy is a national event promoted by the I Borghi più belli d'Italia association, which transforms hundreds of historic centers into romantic settings on the Saturday closest to the summer solstice. Montesarchio, in the province of Benevento, is one of the certified villages in Campania participating in the initiative: for one evening, the Borgo Santo Spirito, the stone-paved living room of the old town, is adorned with soft lights and becomes the heart of the celebration.
The charm of the evening lies in the location itself. Montesarchio spreads out on the slopes of the Taburno massif, with its historic core clustered around the Tower and the Castle, a Lombard-era fortress that dominates the Caudina Valley. Alleys, staircases, stone portals, and small squares follow one another at a leisurely pace: walking through them with dimmed lighting and lit candles gives the village an intimate, almost theatrical dimension. The Municipality of Montesarchio and local associations curate the decorations along the route, featuring photo corners, ornaments, and themed installations.
The Romantic Night format is based on a few recurring ingredients, interpreted differently each year: small-scale live music, readings, guided walks to discover the corners and stories of the village, and tastings of local products. The 2026 edition, the eleventh at the national level, featured the theme «Love for memories»: an invitation to rediscover roots, traditions, and flavors capable of bridging generations. There is no main stage or massive concert, but rather a widespread celebration to be discovered while walking.
The ritual that unites all participating villages is the midnight kiss: as the clock strikes 12, the squares of Italy symbolically join together in the same gesture. It is the most anticipated and photographed moment, the one that gives the event its identity and explains why the Romantic Night has become, in just a few years, one of the most recognizable summer appointments in small Italian towns.
In Montesarchio, the Romantic Night effectively kicks off the municipal summer calendar, curated by the Department of Culture together with local associations. On the same evening, a little later, the Tower hosts the Lombard Feast organized by the Sentinelle della Torre, while the following weeks feature musical and gastronomic festivals, theater, literary meetings, and events dedicated to children. Those arriving for the Romantic Night will find a village already in summer mode, with the historic center lively until late.
Participation in the Romantic Night of Montesarchio is free and does not require reservations: access to Borgo Santo Spirito and the installations is open. Some guided tours, workshops, or tastings may require registration or a small contribution. The final program, with times and meeting points, is released by the Municipality of Montesarchio in the days preceding the event. As this is an evening event in a historic village in inland Campania, comfortable shoes and a light sweater are recommended: even in June, at night, the Caudina Valley is cooler than the coast.
In Montesarchio, the 2026 Romantic Night chose Borgo Santo Spirito as its stage, starting at 7:30 PM on Saturday, June 20. The event was part of the summer calendar presented by the municipal administration, curated by the Councilor for Culture Morena Cecere and the delegate councilor for entertainment Nunzio Nazzaro in collaboration with local associations: a program designed, in their words, to celebrate «the joy of summer but also the cohesion of our community».
The formula combined the scenic lighting of the village, live music, and the opportunity to walk through the alleys of the old town. On the same evening, from 9 PM, the Tower hosted the Lombard Feast organized by the Sentinelle della Torre, creating a continuous path between the lower part of the village and the fortified outpost that dominates the Caudina Valley. As in all participating villages, the night concluded with the midnight kiss.
Nationally, the 2026 edition involved over 230 villages certified by the I Borghi più belli d'Italia association, all gathered around the theme «Love for memories».
The evening was preceded, on Friday, June 19, from 7 PM, by AperiLoco in the municipal villa organized by the Pro Loco of Montesarchio, the first event of the Montesarchio summer calendar.
By car: Montesarchio is located along the SS 7 Appia, the historic route connecting Benevento to Naples through the Caudina Valley; the old town is in the upper part of the village, at the foot of the Tower.
By train: the area is served by the EAV Benevento-Naples line via the Caudina Valley; the reference stop is the San Martino Valle Caudina-Montesarchio-Pannarano station, which is located in the municipality of San Martino Valle Caudina. It is advisable to check schedules, buses, and replacement services on the EAV website before departing.
The evening is experienced entirely on foot: it is preferable to leave the car in the parking areas in the lower part of the town and walk up towards Borgo Santo Spirito.
In 2026, the Romantic Night began at 7:30 PM in Borgo Santo Spirito and continued until the traditional midnight kiss. Free admission, no reservation required.
