The summer solstice in the Irpinian village overlooking the Ofanto, amidst illuminated alleys, soft music, and local flavors.
As the summer solstice arrives, Monteverde participates in The Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, a national event promoted by the 'I Borghi piรน belli d'Italia' association, dedicated to love, the beauty of historic centers, and the enhancement of minor heritage sites. For one evening, the ancient core of this town in the province of Avellino, Campania, transforms into a path of torches, soft lights, live music, and the aromas of local cuisine, with the castle acting as a natural backdrop above the Ofanto valley.
With just over eight hundred inhabitants at an altitude of 740 meters, in that corner of Upper Irpinia where Campania meets Basilicata and Puglia, Monteverde is one of the villages certified by the national association and has recently become a symbol of slow tourism in Campania. Its name derives from Montis Viridis, the green of the woods surrounding the mountain. The castle, a 15th-century Aragonese fortification with cylindrical towers transformed into a stately home in the 18th century, and the former cathedral of Santa Maria di Nazareth tell a history of a bishop's seat and a fiefdom passed between Normans, the Grimaldi princes of Monaco, the Caracciolos, and the Sangermano barons. Nearby, Lake San Pietro and the banks of the Ofanto are the rare habitat of the black stork, of which the village is considered the 'nest'.
The formula chosen by the Municipality of Monteverde and the Pro Loco is that of a widespread event: not a single stage, but a series of stops distributed along the alleys of the historic center, to be explored on foot at a leisurely pace. The ingredients found year after year are now well-established:
At midnight, the ritual common to all participating villages is celebrated: the midnight kiss, which ideally unites the squares of over two hundred Italian historic centers on the same night.
The food and wine experience is a constant of the Monteverde Romantic Night. Alongside the typical products of Upper Irpiniaโa land of grain, cheeses, and peasant cuisineโthe village offers craft beer from the Serrocroce brewery, a local business that has dedicated one of its labels to the town. In past editions, the evening also featured a 'dinner at the foot of the castle' and food stands set up in the historic center, in a formula that combines walking and dining.
The Romantic Night is celebrated on the same night in all villages certified by the association, each with its own program. In 2026, the event reached its eleventh national edition, with over 230 villages involved and the theme 'Love for Memories'. In Campania, Monteverde is among the most loyal participants, alongside other Irpinian villages such as Zungoli, Summonte, Gesualdo, Savignano Irpino, and Frigento. The small scale of the town is part of its charm: here, the event is experienced without excessive crowds, in a historic center that can be crossed on foot in a few minutes and which completely changes its face when illuminated at night.
The 2026 edition of The Romantic Night in the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy took place on Saturday, June 20, involving over 230 certified villages throughout Italy. The eleventh national edition was dedicated to the theme 'Love for Memories', an invitation to rediscover the places that hold the precious moments of one's life, from the square of an important meeting to the street walked as children.
Monteverde, in the province of Avellino, joined in with a widespread program built by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco: a welcome in the 'Enchanted Village', a stroll through the illuminated alleys of the historic center, a corner dedicated to romantic music, a tasting of Serrocroce beer and local flavors, the 'Under the Stars' photo spot, and the 'Wall of Wishes', with a finale featuring torches and soft music. The local Irpinian press described the evening as 'a journey between history and sentiment, between authentic flavors and enchanted views, under a sky full of stars'.
As in all participating villages, the night closed with the traditional midnight kiss, the ritual that ideally unites all the squares involved in the national initiative.
Program reconstructed from communications by the Municipality of Monteverde and the Pro Loco, as reported by the local Irpinian press. Detailed times for individual stops were not publicly released: the evening unfolded from late afternoon until after midnight.
Monteverde is located in Upper Irpinia, on the extreme eastern border of the province of Avellino, a short distance from the territories of Basilicata and Puglia. By car, the reference exits are Lacedonia and Candela on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, from where you continue on provincial roads. The nearest train station is Rocchetta Sant'Antonio-Lacedonia, but the connection to the village must then be completed by car. The most convenient airports are Naples-Capodichino and Bari-Palese.
The historic center is compact, on a slope, and largely pedestrianized during the event: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the edge of the town and walk up towards the castle. The route includes inclines and stone paving.
Access to the village and the evening's entertainment is free; in past editions, the Municipality has indicated the event as free of charge. Only tastings, consumption at stands, and any dinners offered by local restaurateurs are paid, for which direct booking is recommended.
Monteverde has a few small accommodation facilities, including bed and breakfasts, guest houses, and an 'albergo diffuso' (scattered hotel); for a wider choice, you can stay in Lacedonia, Bisaccia, Aquilonia, or Melfi, all a short drive away.
