About Pork Feast

In Ronsecco, a small town in the rice-growing plains of the Vercelli province, the first Sunday of February marks one of the most cherished winter events in Piedmont: The Pork Feast. Organized by the local Pro Loco in the municipal multipurpose hall, this gathering celebrates rustic peasant cuisine, reviving recipes from the days when pig slaughtering was a cornerstone of village life. Dishes like salame sotto grasso, mula, fried blood, pultun, cotechino, and blood sausage with mashed potatoes define a hearty, authentic menu that serves as a gastronomic prologue to the Ronsecco Charity Carnival.

The Pork Feast: Peasant flavors in the heart of the Vercelli area

Amidst the rice paddies and farmsteads of the lower Vercelli plains, Ronsecco preserves a culinary tradition deeply rooted in Piedmontese rural life. The Pork Feast takes place every year on the first Sunday of February at 12:30 PM in the municipal hall, carefully organized by the Ronsecco Pro Loco. More than just a festival, it is a community ritual celebrating the time when every local family processed the pig, ensuring nothing was wasted and every part of the animal became precious sustenance for the winter.

A menu of memories

The lunch features the most authentic dishes of the local peasant tradition, prepared according to recipes passed down through generations. The table is set with specialties that are rarely found today:

  • Salame sotto grasso, preserved using the ancient technique of covering it in lard
  • Mula, a typical sausage of the lower Vercelli area
  • Fried blood, a traditional peasant dish born from necessity
  • Pultun, a local specialty linked to pork processing
  • Cotechino, a symbol of Piedmontese winter cuisine
  • Blood sausage with mashed potatoes, to conclude the feast

It is a journey of taste that tells the story of Ronsecco and rural Piedmont, where the dining table has always been a place of gathering and collective memory.

The link to the Charity Carnival

The Pork Feast effectively opens the season of the Ronsecco Charity Carnival, one of the town's longest-running and most beloved events, which has combined celebration and solidarity for decades. The traditional village masks animate the following weeks with visits, parades, and charity fundraising, in an atmosphere of participation that involves the entire community. Attending the lunch means stepping into the heart of a Carnival that makes generosity its hallmark.

Booking is essential

The hall has limited capacity and the event attracts many participants every year, including visitors from neighboring towns in the Vercelli province. For this reason, booking is mandatory and must be done a few days in advance by contacting the Pro Loco representatives. Those looking for a genuine gastronomic experience, far from tourist circuits and rooted in true Piedmontese tradition, will find a welcoming table and a rare, authentic village atmosphere in Ronsecco.
