The living sacred representation in the Tyrrhenian village, through the streets of Saponara
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Passion of Christ is the living sacred representation of the Municipality of Saponara, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. Founded in 2024 by the U Casteddu association, with the patronage of the local administration, it has quickly become one of the most anticipated Holy Week events in the region, drawing spectators from neighboring towns.
The performance is a true living Stations of the Cross that winds through the streets, squares, and stairways of Saponara's historic center. The narrative follows the final moments of Jesus' life: the Last Supper, Judas' betrayal, the arrest, the trial, the flagellation, the meeting with Mary along the ascent to Calvary, and the crucifixion. The resurrection scene, described by the organizers as "the scene par excellence," concludes the performance with a message of hope and redemption.
What is striking about the Passion of Saponara is its choral dimension: over one hundred performers, all volunteers and members of the association, wear meticulously detailed historical costumes to bring the Gospel characters to life. Artistic and technical direction is handled by Nino Gangemi, while the script was curated by Father Giannandrea Rizzo. Tailors, sound and lighting technicians, actors, and organizers work for months to prepare for the event, in a process that involves the entire community.
The performance is part of the rich Sicilian tradition of Holy Week rites and sacred dramas, which are deeply rooted in the island's popular culture. In Saponara, this heritage intertwines with the identity of a village dominated by the ruins of its ancient castle, set in a landscape between the sea and the hills. For those visiting Sicily during the Easter period, the Passion of Christ offers the chance to discover an authentic event, far from the most crowded tourist circuits and experienced with great passion by the locals.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. Previous editions took place during Holy Week, in the evening, with the participation of over one hundred performers. To find out the updated date, time, and route, it is best to follow the communications from the Municipality of Saponara and the U Casteddu association.
