The sacred Passion play during Holy Week at the Urban Park of Giardinello
The Passion of Christ is the sacred representation that brings Holy Week to life in Giardinello, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, located about twenty kilometers west of the regional capital at the foot of the San Martino mountains. The event, promoted by the Pro Loco of Giardinello with the patronage of the Municipality and the collaboration of the "Gesรน-Maria-Giuseppe" Archpriest's office, transforms the town into a large open-air stage dedicated to the story of the Passion.
Through an accurate historical and scenic reconstruction, spectators are transported back in time to relive the most poignant moments of the Passion of Christ. The performance stages the fundamental steps of the Gospel narrative: the trial of Jesus, the ascent to Calvary with the cross, the crucifixion, and the moving deposition. Period costumes, evocative settings, and the actors' performances make every scene intense and engaging.
The event is not only a cultural appointment but also an opportunity for reflection on the meaning of Christ's sacrifice and his spiritual legacy. It is an event open to everyone, designed to share a moment of great emotional and religious intensity, where the community of Giardinello gathers around a shared tradition.
A large part of the sacred representation takes place within the Urban Park of Giardinello, a well-maintained green space in the town prepared specifically for the occasion. The choice of this location, which is both spacious and intimate, helps create the evocative atmosphere that characterizes the entire evening.
Following in the tradition of the sacred Passion plays of Holy Week found throughout Sicily and Italy, the Passion of Christ in Giardinello is a recent but deeply felt event, capable of uniting popular devotion, memory, and collective participation during the Easter period.
The 2026 edition of the Passion of Christ in Giardinello was held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, as part of the Holy Week celebrations. As confirmed by the municipal administration, most of the sacred representation took place within the Urban Park, a green area of the town cleaned and prepared specifically to host the event and the public.
Once again this year, the event, promoted by the Pro Loco of Giardinello, re-enacted the historical and scenic reconstruction of the final hours of Jesus' life: from the trial to the ascent to Calvary, from the crucifixion to the deposition, in an emotional and devotional journey shared by the entire community.
Giardinello is located about 20 km west of Palermo, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (exit Partinico or Carini), continuing along the provincial roads. The nearest train station is Carini-Montelepre, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
The event is held during Holy Week, generally in the spring. It is advisable to check the date and time on the Pro Loco di Giardinello social media pages as Easter approaches.
The performance is a public event open to everyone.
