A Christmas itinerary across twelve churches and chapels in Piedimonte Matese
Every year, between the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and Epiphany, The Nativity Trail transforms Piedimonte Matese into a vast open-air museum. The initiative was launched in December 2023 at the proposal of the municipal administration, in collaboration with the parishes of Santa Maria Maggiore, Ave Gratia Plena, San Marcello, and San Michele, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Occorrevole, the Pro Loco Vallata, and the Culture Committee. This is not merely an exhibition of nativity scenes, but a historical, cultural, and anthropological itinerary that traverses the entire city, rediscovering rare, quiet, and often inaccessible places.
The starting point of the itinerary is the Raffaele Marrocco Civic Museum (MuCiRaMa), housed in Largo San Domenico within the ancient late-14th-century Dominican complex, which was reopened in 2008 and redesigned with modern criteria in 2013. From here, the route branches out into the network of churches and chapels in the historic center: twelve places of worship are involved, some of which are opened to the public for the very first time.
The nativity scenes displayed along the route reproduce the scenes of the superb Neapolitan tradition, an intangible heritage that remains alive here, bridging the past and the present. Visitors to the Trail do not just find the Nativity: they encounter the people of the 18th-century nativity scene, workshops, taverns, trades, and shepherds—a true representation of historical Neapolitan society where the mystery of the birth is often barely hinted at, almost hidden within the choral scene.
Alongside tradition, the Nativity Trail has opened a space for innovation. For several editions, students from the IT department of the ISISS of Piedimonte Matese have created digital experiences that complement the terracotta and papier-mâché nativity scenes: immersive virtual reality environments where one can literally walk among the characters and typical scenes, a multiplayer nativity scene rebuilt within the Minecraft platform, and a drawing activity with a headset that allows visitors to create their own nativity artwork and display it in a virtual gallery. It is an unusual and successful way to bring younger generations closer to an ancient tradition.
At the end of the festivities, the event concludes with an awards ceremony dedicated to those who participated in the nativity scene competition: parishes, associations, schools, and families who set up their works along the route. It is an opportunity to review the turnout and renew the appointment for the following year.
The Municipality of Piedimonte Matese, in the Province of Caserta, Campania region, is the main center of the upper Caserta area at the foot of the Matese massif and one of the gateways to the Matese Regional Park. Its historic center, layered between medieval layouts and modern-age palaces, is perfect for a walking tour: the distances between churches are short, and the evening visit, with the lights on, restores that timeless atmosphere that the organizers describe as the true meaning of the initiative.
The Nativity Trail is free, family-friendly, and designed to be explored at a leisurely pace in one evening. In just a few editions, it has already become one of the most popular Christmas events in the Matese area, capable of combining popular devotion, the enhancement of artistic heritage, and the extraordinary opening of cultural sites that are otherwise closed.
The Nativity Trail was inaugurated on December 7, 2025, at the Raffaele Marrocco Civic Museum in Largo San Domenico and concluded on January 6, 2026, the day of the Epiphany. Once again, the itinerary crossed the historic center of Piedimonte Matese, visiting twelve churches and chapels, with the collaboration of the parishes of Santa Maria Maggiore, Ave Gratia Plena, San Marcello, and San Michele, and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Occorrevole.
The most talked-about novelty came from students of the 4th and 5th years of the IT department at the ISISS of Piedimonte Matese, led by principal Prof. Bernarda De Girolamo. Three projects were presented: six interactive virtual reality environments where visitors walk among the characters and typical scenes of the nativity, a multiplayer reconstruction built inside the Minecraft platform, and a drawing activity with a headset, with the works collected in a virtual gallery.
Visits took place in the evening, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, on holidays and weekends: December 7, 8, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28, 2025, and January 1, 3, 4, and 6, 2026. An additional event on December 18 hosted a living nativity scene with the students' virtual reality projects at the agricultural institute headquarters.
