About Feast of Saint Francis at Occorrevole

Every October 4th, the Santa Maria Occorrevole Convent-Sanctuary, perched on Monte Muto above Piedimonte Matese, celebrates Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy. The Rosary, confessions, and a solemn Mass take place in the shadow of the imposing bell tower overlooking the valley, surrounded by the 1436 Marian church and the Solitudine hermitage nestled in the woods. It is a sober and profound event that brings together the community of the Matese and the upper Caserta area in one of the most beloved places of prayer in inland Campania.

A Franciscan feast on the heights of the Matese

On October 4th, the solemnity of Saint Francis of Assisi and the feast of Italy's patron saint, the Santa Maria Occorrevole Convent-Sanctuary in Piedimonte Matese, in the province of Caserta, experiences its most heartfelt day. The Franciscan complex stands on the slopes of Monte Muto, above the town, and its bell tower dominates the valley below: a landmark visible from afar and, for centuries, the spiritual guardian of the Matese territory.

This is not a food festival or a street fair. It is a religious feast, simple and participatory, attracting faithful, pilgrims, and hikers from across the upper Terra di Lavoro. The spirit is that indicated by the friars themselves: joy, dialogue, encounter, song, and praise to God, set against a backdrop of woods that ignite with autumn colors in October.

The sanctuary and its history

Its origins date back to 1436: tradition tells of a shepherd who, on a Saturday in Lent, found his lost lamb kneeling before an image of the Virgin painted on a wall. From that episode, devotion was born and a Marian temple arose on the mountain slopes. The frescoed apseโ€”declared a National Monument in 1926โ€”was adjoined by the current church during the Renaissance; the 17th-century Baroque inserts were removed during the 1934 restorations to restore the building's original lines.

On July 21, 1674, the sanctuary was granted in perpetual use to the Friars Minor: the first twelve religious climbed Monte Muto led by Father Giovanni di Santa Maria, and among them was a young man destined for the altars, Saint Giovanni Giuseppe della Croce (1654-1734), who served here as novice master for nearly twenty years. Still today, Santa Maria Occorrevole is the interprovincial novitiate house for the Friars Minor of Southern Italy.

The Solitudine, the hermitage in the woods

Behind the convent, immersed in vegetation, lies the Solitudine hermitage, established in 1678: a small convent with a chapel and a series of small chapels scattered through the woods overlooking the Torano valley. A majolica Via Crucis accompanies the path toward the sanctuary; inside, a Baroque altar preserves the relics of the martyrs Petronius, Flavian, and Vincent, along with memories of Saint Giovanni Giuseppe della Croce. In the heart of the hermitage stands the small church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, where every August 2nd the sanctuary also celebrates the Pardon of Assisi.

How the day unfolds

The structure of the feast is well-established and repeats year after year, with times that may vary slightly:

  • recitation of the Holy Rosary in the late afternoon, with friars available for confessions;
  • Solemn Holy Mass in honor of Saint Francis, presided over by a prominent celebrant: in past years, the Bishop of the Diocese of Alife-Caiazzo or the Provincial Minister of the Friars Minor;
  • song and fraternity, with the novice community animating the liturgy;
  • opening of the church and, when possible, the Solitudine hermitage to visitors.

On the eve, October 3rd, the Franciscan family commemorates the Transitus of Saint Francis, his death at the Porziuncola in 1226, and in more than one edition, this celebration has opened the feast from the evening before.

2026, the eighth centenary of the Transitus

2026 is no ordinary year: it marks the eight hundred years since the Transitus of the Poverello (1226-2026), and the entire Franciscan family is living a jubilee year. At Santa Maria Occorrevole, the centenary has been accompanied by the "Franciscan Saturdays 1226-2026" cycle, training days led by Friar Antonio Garofano on the theme "From identity to identification," and events such as the spirituality day "In the Footsteps of Francis" on July 11, 2026, promoted together with the Diocese of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant'Agata de' Goti. One can therefore expect a particularly well-attended solemnity on October 4th.

Piedimonte Matese, gateway to the Matese

The municipality of Piedimonte Matese is the main center of the upper Caserta area, in Campania, at the foot of the Matese massif and at the threshold of the regional park of the same name. Climbing to Santa Maria Occorrevole on the day of Saint Francis means uniting the two souls of the place: the devotional and the naturalistic, in one of the widest views in the province of Caserta.

Why it is worth the climb

  • an authentic feast, experienced by the local community, without tourist trappings;
  • a sanctuary with nearly six centuries of history and a still-inhabited Franciscan hermitage;
  • the panorama from the convent square in the light of the autumn sunset.
