Christmas in Padula: nativity scenes in the alleys, concerts, and the Epiphany Feast
Every year, between early December and Epiphany, the historic center of Padula, in the heart of the Vallo di Diano in the province of Salerno, lights up with the holiday program The Magic of Christmas. Promoted by the municipal administration as part of tourism promotion and regional development projects for the Campania Region, it is not just a single event, but a widespread calendar combining exhibitions, concerts, performances, and festivities, all centered around a specific theme: the nativity scene.
The heart of the festival is the nativity trail that animates the village alleys each year. The "Presepi in mostra" (Nativity Scenes on Display) exhibition, curated by the "P. Gallo" section of the Italian Association of Friends of the Nativity Scene, chaired by Germano Torresi, reached its 30th edition in December 2025โa milestone representing thirty years of craftsmanship, educational workshops, and restoration work carried out by local volunteers.
The works are housed in some of the most evocative spots in the historic center:
Alongside models in the Neapolitan style, there are reconstructions inspired by the architecture and trades of the Vallo di Diano: stone houses, ovens, mills, and scenes of rural life that preserve the memory of the valley's villages. This is a deliberate choice by the association, which in recent years has focused on recovering local identity rather than merely reproducing the classic Neapolitan nativity scene.
The trail also extends inside the Certosa di San Lorenzo, the grand Carthusian monastery and UNESCO World Heritage site that serves as Padula's iconic monument. Along the visitor route, the nativity scenes created by the association engage in a dialogue with the cloisters, the helical staircase, and the 18th-century library, while local polyphonic choirs accompany the public with traditional Christmas carols. Seeing a nativity scene inside the Certosa is, in itself, one of the most unique experiences the Vallo di Diano has to offer in winter.
The festival is more than just nativity scenes: each edition features Christmas concerts, theatrical performances, conferences on the history and significance of the nativity, and events designed for families. Children's choirs, contemporary drama, and classic Neapolitan songs coexist in a program spread across churches, historic halls, and village squares, almost always with free admission.
The cycle concludes with the Epiphany Feast on January 6th in Piazza Umberto I: a morning of live performances, music, and surprises for children, with which the Municipality of Padula bids farewell to the holiday season. It is the most popular moment of the festival, a time when the town gathers in the square before returning to the daily routine, and an occasion for the administration to invite everyone to rediscover the joy of togetherness and the beauty of the local area.
Padula in winter is a different destination than in summer: fewer visitors, warm lights in the alleys, and the slow pace of a mountain village. Visiting the Certosa and then heading up to the historic center for the nativity trail allows you to discover the two complementary faces of the townโthe monumental and the popularโin just a few hours. Visitors from outside the region will also find other Vallo di Diano towns just a few kilometers away, each with its own Christmas traditions, in a corner of Campania that remains authentic and uncrowded during the winter.
Christmas 2025-2026 in Padula coincided with an important anniversary: the 30th edition of "Presepi in mostra", the exhibition curated by the "P. Gallo" section of the Italian Association of Friends of the Nativity Scene, chaired by Germano Torresi and supported by the municipal administration led by Mayor Michele Cimino.
The inauguration was held on the afternoon of Saturday, December 6, 2025, in the Church of San Clemente, followed by a conference dedicated to the language of the nativity scene and a Christmas concert by the Calicanto Children's Choir. From the following day, the trail extended to the Church of San Nicola de Donnis, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, and the Multimedia Museum on Salita Sant'Agostino.
On Sunday, December 7, 2025, for the "Sunday at the Museum" initiative promoted by the Ministry of Culture, the Certosa di San Lorenzo opened its doors for free: from 5:00 PM, the association's nativity scenes, inspired by the monastery's rooms, accompanied the visit along with the harmonies of the Polimnia Polyphonic Choir. In the evening, the Sala Sanseverino hosted the show "Sfogliatelle e altre storie d'amore" as part of the Ditirambi Valdianesi contemporary drama festival. The nativity display along the Certosa's visitor route remained set up until January 6, 2026.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exit Padula-Buonabitacolo, then a few minutes to the town. The nearest airports are Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi and Naples-Capodichino, connected to the Vallo di Diano by bus lines.
The events are distributed between the historic center (Church of San Nicola de Donnis, Church of San Michele Arcangelo, Church of San Clemente, Multimedia Museum on Salita Sant'Agostino) and the Certosa di San Lorenzo, Viale Certosa 1. The Epiphany Feast is held in Piazza Umberto I.
The municipal festival events are free to attend. For the Certosa di San Lorenzo, standard ministry hours and rates apply, with extraordinary free openings during the "Sunday at the Museum" initiative; for information, call 0975 77745.
