Two days of nature, mining history, and tradition on Mount Amiata in Castell'Azzara
The Awakening of the Bear is the spring event of Castell'Azzara, a village perched on the slopes of Mount Amiata in the far south-east of the province of Grosseto, Tuscany. The event's name stems from a charming local tradition: the people of Castell'Azzara have long been nicknamed "Bears," so the festival marks the moment when the town, like a bear emerging from hibernation, wakes up with the arrival of spring. For two days, the small municipality opens its streets and natural treasures to residents and visitors alike.
The heart of the event lies in the deep bond between Castell'Azzara and its territory. Among the most anticipated activities are the pre-booked guided tours of two iconic sites of Amiata’s mining and karst landscape:
These are complemented by walks and hikes in the wooded surroundings of the village, an ideal opportunity to discover an authentic and lesser-known corner of the hilly Maremma.
The program blends culture and entertainment: throughout the two days, there are theatrical performances, live music, and entertainment. For families and children, there are bouncy castles and games, while local associations organize workshops, markets, and outdoor activities that involve the entire community.
As evening falls, the festival moves along Via Dante Alighieri, where food stalls open from 7:00 PM, serving traditional dishes and local products from the Amiata and Maremma regions. Local businesses remain open for the occasion, helping to create a festive atmosphere throughout the historic center.
The Awakening of the Bear is organized by the Pro Loco of Castell'Azzara with the involvement of local associations. It is the perfect occasion for those seeking an authentic experience, far from the most crowded tourist destinations in Tuscany, immersed in the landscapes of Mount Amiata and the traditions of a small village in the province of Grosseto.
For the 2026 edition, scheduled for Friday, May 1st and Saturday, May 2nd, Castell'Azzara renewed its spring festival. The pre-booked guided tours of the Sassocolato Cave and the Cornacchino Mine were confirmed, along with walks in the surrounding area, theatrical performances, live music, and bouncy castles for children. From 7:00 PM, on Via Dante Alighieri, food stalls offered the typical flavors of the Amiata and Maremma traditions.
Castell'Azzara is located on the south-eastern side of Mount Amiata, in the province of Grosseto. By car, it can be reached from the SS2 Cassia road with an inland detour towards Amiata; the nearest train station is in Grosseto, from where you can continue by car. The reference airports are Rome-Fiumicino or Florence-Peretola.
Admission to the event is free. The food stalls on Via Alighieri open from 7:00 PM. Guided tours of the Sassocolato Cave and the Cornacchino Mine require booking.
We recommend comfortable clothing for walks and hikes and booking your visits to the natural and mining sites in advance. For updated information, it is useful to follow the Facebook page of the Pro Loco of Castell'Azzara.
