The agricultural world of Irpinia gives thanks for the fruits of the earth
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, as the agricultural season draws to a close and the fields of the Ufita Valley have already been plowed for winter, Ariano Irpino hosts the Provincial Thanksgiving Day. This is not a food festival or a commercial fair: it is a moment when the farmers of Irpinia gather to give thanks for the harvest, for the work accomplished, and for the land that continues to sustain this inland territory of Campania. The event is promoted by Coldiretti Avellino in collaboration with the Municipality of Ariano Irpino and the Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia.
Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated throughout Italy since 1951, born from a collaboration between Coldiretti and the Italian Episcopal Conference, which releases a message dedicated to the work of the land each year. The national celebration is accompanied by regional and provincial events; in the province of Avellino, the Ariano stop has become a consolidated tradition, reaching its 75th edition in 2025. It is an occasion that unites two dimensions: the religious, with the mass and blessing, and the civil and trade-unionist, with reflections on the concrete challenges facing Irpinian agricultural businesses.
The structure of the event is simple and recognizable, repeating with few variations each year:
Past editions have featured symbolic gestures: baskets of typical Irpinian products โ walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, truffles โ brought to the altar from different parts of the province, and the involvement of catechism children, who in 2025 were given a booklet on the Mediterranean diet and eating healthy, seasonal food.
With over 20,000 inhabitants spread across a vast territory of districts, Ariano Irpino is one of the largest municipalities in the province of Avellino and one of the most important agricultural centers in inland Campania. Durum wheat, fodder, livestock, vineyards, and olive groves shape a landscape of hills that change color in autumn. The city is also known for its artistic ceramics and local wines; however, Thanksgiving is the festival that best captures its rural soul, that of the family-run businesses resisting in an inland area marked by depopulation.
The 76th National Thanksgiving Day has been set by the Italian Episcopal Conference for November 8, 2026, with a theme that speaks directly to territories like Irpinia: "Glimpses of gratitude and hope for the country's inland areas." The date for the provincial celebration in Ariano Irpino, which in the past has sometimes taken place on Sundays following the national one, has not yet been announced by Coldiretti Avellino: this page will be updated as soon as the official program is published.
It is a free, family-friendly, and authentic event, far from tourist traps: those who arrive in Ariano Irpino that Sunday will find a square filled with tractors polished for the occasion, the sound of church bells, greetings between neighbors, and the scent of the Irpinian autumn. For those traveling to discover the lesser-known side of Campania, it is a rare opportunity to understand firsthand what it means to live by agriculture in an inland area of the Apennines today.
At the time of writing this entry (July 2026), Coldiretti Avellino has not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 Provincial Thanksgiving Day in Ariano Irpino. The national reference is already known: the 76th National Thanksgiving Day is set for November 8, 2026, and the message from the Italian Episcopal Conference is dedicated to the country's inland areas, a theme that closely concerns Irpinia and the Ufita Valley.
Based on previous editions, the Ariano event takes place on a Sunday in November and includes the rally of agricultural machinery in the square, the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the diocesan bishop, and the blessing of the tractors. None of these elements are yet confirmed for 2026: this page will be updated as soon as Coldiretti Avellino, the Municipality of Ariano Irpino, and the Diocese publish the official program.
By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Grottaminarda, then SS90 delle Puglie towards Ariano Irpino (approx. 15 km). By train: Ariano Irpino station on the Benevento-Foggia line, connected to the center by local buses. By bus: Air Campania connections from Avellino, Benevento, and Naples.
The rally and blessing of agricultural machinery are held in Piazza Mazzini, in the center of Ariano Irpino; the religious celebration takes place in one of the city churches (in 2025, the Church of San Pietro Apostolo). Locations are accessible and within walking distance of each other.
Free entry to all parts of the day. The communal lunch, when scheduled, takes place at local restaurants with costs covered by participants.
This is an outdoor event in mid-November: in Ariano Irpino, which is over 700 meters above sea level, the morning can be very cold and windy, so warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended. Arriving early is the best way to see the agricultural machinery as they line up in the square.
