About Terra e Grani

Terra e Grani is an annual summer festival held in Piazza Sant'Anna, in the Matinella district of Albanella, dedicated to preserving the rural history of the Piana del Sele. Organized by the APS Mimì association, the event features conferences on ancient grains, children's workshops, historical pageants, displays of vintage farming tools, and local grain-based crafts, all accompanied by folk music, traditional dancing, and a culinary scene centered on local flour. Free admission.

Terra e Grani: The Grain Festival of the Piana del Sele

Terra e Grani is a vibrant event held in Piazza Sant'Anna, in the Matinella district of the town of Albanella, in the province of Salerno, right in the heart of the Piana del Sele. This grassroots festival was created by the local APS Mimì association to safeguard the memory of the rural communities in this corner of Campania and to restore grain to its rightful place as a symbol of local history and economy. The festival strikes a balance between celebration and substance: alongside traditional dances and food stalls, it hosts academic conferences, research presentations, and concrete proposals for local agriculture.

From the 2024 Debut to a Summer Tradition

The first edition took place on the evening of September 28, 2024, in Piazza Sant'Anna, featuring a cultural conference, an exhibition of vintage agricultural tools, children's workshops, a culinary showcase, and a concert by the folk group I Sunaria. The president of APS Mimì, Giancarlo Carrano, introduced the event as a way to "add value to our land" and support those currently cultivating ancient grains. Since the following year, the festival has been moved to early July, immediately after the harvest, and expanded to two days.

Ancient Grains and the University of Salerno Partnership

What sets Terra e Grani apart from other rural festivals is its research project on ancient grains. APS Mimì has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Salerno (Difarma) to study and promote historical wheat varieties. After three years of scientific work, the recovered seeds were replanted in the fields of Albanella: the harvest is then transformed into flours, which are presented to the public during the official conference.

Around this core, the festival explores topics such as a seed bank for ancient grains, the pursuit of PAT (Traditional Agri-food Product) status for the Raviolo Albanellese, and the reclamation of abandoned farmland, with the ambition of making the Albanella grain supply chain a model that can be replicated throughout Campania.

The Historical Pageant and the Rite of Demeter

The spectacle is highlighted by a historical pageant featuring participants in traditional dress. The most recent edition introduced the Rite of Demeter and the Offering Maiden, a Magna Graecia-inspired re-enactment with Hellenic-style costumes—a nod to nearby Paestum and the cult of the goddess of the harvest, integrated into an interregional project on the "Grain Route." The event is part of the Regional Network of Historical Re-enactments.

Crafts, Gastronomy, and Folk Music

The square hosts an exhibition dedicated to the grain supply chain, covering everything from sowing and milling to bread-making, alongside a display of historical farming tools curated by local collectors. The food area bears a title that says it all: "Tutta farina del nostro sacco" (All flour from our own sack), featuring handmade pasta, bread, and traditional desserts prepared with local flours by village associations.

The evenings are filled with folk music and performances by folkloric groups, with traditional dances that keep the audience engaged until late. Children can enjoy free workshops designed to connect them with the town's cultural roots: Mani in Pasta (Hands in the Dough), dedicated to traditional pasta making, and The Color of Grain, Kids and Nature, a creative session.

Awards and Recognition

Every year, Terra e Grani presents the "Comuni del Grano" (Grain Towns) Award to local administrations that support the cultivation of ancient varieties, and the Mimì Award for the "Best Agricultural Business" in the area. The festival concludes with the Terra e Grani lottery draw.

Albanella and Matinella: The Festival Setting

Albanella is a hilltop town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Piana del Sele, just a few kilometers from the Cilento National Park and the Paestum archaeological site. Matinella is its most populous district, located on the plains about five kilometers from the historic center. For those visiting Cilento, Terra e Grani is a chance to experience an authentic, agricultural side of Campania, far from the postcard images of the coast. The event is organized by APS Mimì, led by Giancarlo Carrano, with the patronage of the Municipality of Albanella; admission is free.

Terra e Grani — edition 2026

The third edition of Terra e Grani took place on July 4th and 5th, 2026, in Piazza Sant'Anna, Matinella di Albanella. Two days featuring a conference presenting flours from ancient grains replanted in the area, a historical pageant with the Rite of Demeter, vintage agricultural tool exhibitions, grain-related crafts, children's workshops, folk music by the Castigamatt, and the "Tutta farina del nostro sacco" culinary experience. Free admission.

The 2026 Edition: July 4th and 5th in Matinella

The third edition of Terra e Grani was held on Saturday, July 4th, and Sunday, July 5th, 2026, in Piazza Sant'Anna, in the Matinella district of Albanella, in the province of Salerno. This was a breakthrough year: after three years of research conducted with the University of Salerno (Difarma), the ancient grains recovered and replanted in the fields of Albanella were harvested and transformed into flour, which was presented to the public during the official conference.

Alongside the square's program—historical pageant, grain-related crafts, children's workshops, folk music, and traditional dances—the event hosted an institutional discussion on the future of local agriculture, with the participation of the Regional Councilor for Agriculture of Campania, Maria Carmela Serluca, the University of Salerno, the Italian Farmers Association, ASD Albanella, the Sofia Association, and various municipal administrations from neighboring towns. Topics addressed included the creation of an ancient grain seed bank, PAT recognition for the Raviolo Albanellese, and the reclamation of abandoned farmland. The stated goal is to make the Albanella ancient grain supply chain a model that can be replicated throughout the region.

A new addition this year was the Magna Graecia-inspired re-enactment, Rite of Demeter and the Offering Maiden, with participants in Hellenic-style costumes, integrated into an interregional project on the "Grain Route." The square also featured historical farming tools from the collection curated by Antonio Coviello of Roccadaspide, while young musicians from Milan contributed to the music with a Celtic repertoire. The event was organized by APS Mimì, led by Giancarlo Carrano.

Getting There

By Car — Matinella is located on the plains, along the roads connecting Albanella to Capaccio Paestum and Serre. From the A2 Mediterranean Motorway, take the Battipaglia or Eboli exit and continue toward the Piana del Sele; from Salerno, take the SS 18 south. The event takes place in Piazza Sant'Anna, in the center of the district: on festival nights, it is advisable to arrive early and park in the surrounding streets.

By Train and Plane — The main train station for Albanella is Capaccio-Roccadaspide, on the Battipaglia-Reggio Calabria line; an alternative with more connections is Battipaglia, a hub for Salerno and Naples. The nearest airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi in Pontecagnano, followed by Naples-Capodichino. From the stations, public bus connections to Matinella are available but infrequent in the evening: it is best to have a car.

Admission and Prices

Admission to the festival is free, as are the children's workshops. Only food and drinks at the stalls and tickets for the Terra e Grani lottery (sold during the two days) are for purchase.

Practical Tips

  • Activities take place outdoors in the square: while early July evenings are pleasant, a light sweater is recommended.
  • Children's workshops have limited spots: it is best to inquire in advance by contacting the association.
  • The visit pairs well with a day at the Paestum archaeological site, about twenty kilometers away.
  • For accommodation, the best options are the farmhouses (agriturismi) of the Piana del Sele or the hotels along the Cilento coast.
