The grand prose, music, and dance season of Friuli Venezia Giulia's premier theatre
The Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine is the main theatre in Friuli Venezia Giulia and one of the most important in the Italian Northeast. Every year, its season draws thousands of spectators to the heart of Udine, and the 2025/2026 edition – the XXIX – confirms its ambition for a nationally-level programme, featuring great Italian theatre performers, concerts, opera, and dance.
From October 2025 to May 2026, the programme offers 60 events and 90 curtain calls, divided among Prose, Music, Opera, Operetta, Dance, as well as History Lectures, Science Lectures, and numerous other collateral events. It is one of the most packed seasons ever staged by the theatre, designed to appeal to all audiences, from lovers of spoken theatre to fans of symphonic music.
The Prose section features 25 events, including brilliant comedies, noir, and reinterpretations of classics. The season opens on October 16th with Luigi Pirandello's L'uomo, la bestia e la virtù, directed by Roberto Valerio, starring Vanessa Gravina, Max Malatesta, and Nicola Rignanese. Among the most anticipated titles are Riccardo III directed by Antonio Latella with Vinicio Marchioni, Anton Chekhov's The Seagull with Giuliana De Sio, and the musicals Singin' in the Rain and Aggiungi un posto a tavola with Lorella Cuccarini.
Alongside prose, the season dedicates ample space to music, with symphonic concerts, recitals, and events that have made the Teatro Nuovo a benchmark for great music in Friuli. Opera, operetta, and dance productions, as well as the popular History and Science Lectures – educational formats that bring great culture to the wider public – complete the programme.
Inaugurated in 1997 on Via Trento, the Teatro Nuovo is managed by a Foundation supported by the Municipality of Udine and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Its programme is now one of the most followed cultural events in the Friulian capital and undoubtedly deserves an evening in its seats, perhaps combined with a stroll through the historic centre and dinner in one of Udine's many traditional taverns.
