Open-air circus and theatre in the garden of the Casa delle donne Lucha y Siesta, in Rome
Teatro in Giardino is the open-air circus and theatre festival that brings the garden of the Casa delle donne Lucha y Siesta to life, located at Via Lucio Sestio 10, in Rome's Municipio VII, within the Appio-Tuscolano district. From April to June, the green space transforms into an intimate open-air stage where clowns, jugglers, acrobats, and actors present lighthearted, poetic theatre suitable for all ages.
The format is that of a widespread and convivial festival: each event combines a performance with a social gathering, featuring aperitifs or snacks provided by La Tana, making the garden a place for meeting before it is a place for viewing.
The heart of the festival consists of four shows, each with its own unique language: from a clownish vocal trio to circus-magic, from children's entertainment to surreal theatre focused on civil rights. A deliberately diverse program that alternates comedy, acrobatics, and storytelling, suitable for both adults and families with children.
Lucha y Siesta is a women's shelter and feminist/transfeminist common good founded in Rome in 2008. Beyond being an anti-violence centre and a shelter for women and minors, it is a cultural hub that opens its doors to festivals, workshops, and meetings. Teatro in Giardino was born from this vocation: to bring performing arts into a place of connection and care, where the show also becomes an opportunity for community building.
The festival is supported by Periferiacapitale, the Rome-based program of the Fondazione Charlemagne, which supports cultural projects rooted in local neighbourhoods.
Special attention is paid to accessibility: the venue and the restroom are accessible to people with motor disabilities, and the restroom is equipped with a reducer, a step stool, and a changing table. A choice that reflects the identity of the place and makes the festival open to the widest possible audience, including families.
In the landscape of the capital's cultural summer, Teatro in Giardino occupies a precious and understated space: not a massive festival, but a local event that brings contemporary circus and open-air theatre into a neighbourhood garden. For those living in or visiting Rome and the Lazio region, it is an opportunity to discover a less touristy and more solidarity-driven side of the city, where live art serves to strengthen bonds and rights.
The 2026 festival spans four evenings (and one afternoon) between April and June, each featuring a different show preceded by a convivial moment. A program ranging from clownish comedy to magic, from children's theatre to surreal civil theatre, all outdoors in the garden on Via Lucio Sestio, Rome.
Evening events begin with an aperitif at 7:30 PM followed by the show at 9:00 PM; the event dedicated to children features a snack at 3:30 PM followed by the show at 5:00 PM.
Casa delle donne Lucha y Siesta, Via Lucio Sestio 10, 00174 Rome (Municipio VII, Appio-Tuscolano).
The venue is in the south-east quadrant of Rome, well-connected by public transport; the nearest metro stop is on Line A (Appio-Tuscolano). We recommend using public transport due to the scarcity of parking in the area.
The venue and restroom are accessible to people with motor disabilities; the restroom is equipped with a reducer, step stool, and changing table.
