The heart of Roman freestyle

In the Appio-Tuscolano district, just a short walk from the Ponte Lungo metro station, the skate park between Via Adria and Via Gela takes on a new life every Thursday evening. From 8:00 PM, the ramps and graffiti-covered walls become the arena for Ateneo, the collective that has been animating Rome's freestyle scene since April 2023. It is a phenomenon rooted in the so-called "muretti" (little walls)—spontaneous meeting spots across Italy where improvised rap returns to its most direct form: no stage, no tickets, just a speaker, a beat, and anyone willing to grab the mic.

How the evening works

The mechanism is simple and consistent, which is exactly what makes it so effective. Those who want to participate sign up at the start of the night and then go through a selection process. From there, they enter the tournament proper, structured as a single-elimination bracket.

• 40-second solos: each challenger has less than a minute to win over the audience and judges.
• 2-minute rumbles: the phase where rappers face off in direct, back-and-forth exchanges.
• Open cyphers: moments where the circle opens up to anyone who wants to jump in.
• Prizes: winners receive custom merchandise and, most importantly, top seeding for other contests.

This last point is what makes Ateneo more than just a night out with friends: the collective acts as a nursery for major national freestyle tournaments. Those who make a name for themselves at Ponte Lungo often go on to compete on much larger stages, and the Roman scene has already seen artists pass through here who have reached national television.

An open and inclusive environment

The organizers are firm on one point: Ateneo aims to be a safe and welcoming space. Women are just as much a part of the circle as anyone else, and the evening is not limited to freestyle alone. Surrounding the battles, you'll find beatboxing, rap writing, graffiti artists working on the park walls, and hip-hop culture in its various disciplines. You don't need to be a pro to participate: a large part of the audience consists of kids trying the microphone for the first time.

From Thursdays to block parties

The weekly activity is the heart of the project, but throughout the year, Ateneo also participates in larger events hosted at the same skate park. This is the case with the Urban Vibes Block Parties, days built in collaboration with other Roman entities like Urbis Next Gen, Sons Of Alchemist, Brik54, and Graff Dream: from the early afternoon, there are graffiti sessions, breakdance competitions, bike polo matches, and beatboxing, leading up to the freestyle battles and live performances in the evening. These are the moments when the Ponte Lungo community shows itself to the neighborhood in its most complete form.
