The ancient devotional and culinary tradition of Lizzano around March 19th
The Tavole di San Giuseppe are one of the most defining events for the community of Lizzano, a town in the province of Taranto, Apulia. This deeply rooted devotional tradition draws believers, curious onlookers, and visitors every year around the feast of Saint Joseph, celebrated on March 19th. At the heart of the festival are the tavole (tables): large votive altars set up in private homes and the headquarters of confraternities and associations, covered in pristine white tablecloths and laden with symbolic dishes of traditional peasant cuisine.
The core of the event is the preparation of these tables, which serve as true devotional banquets offered as a sign of gratitude or as a vow. The dishes, strictly meatless in accordance with Lenten tradition, evoke the ancient flavors of the Apulian land.
The setup is managed by local families and organizations such as the Confraternita della Misericordia, the L'Albero Arcobaleno association, and the Pro Loco, who open their doors to share the spirit of hospitality that defines the festival.
Beyond its culinary dimension, the festival maintains a strong liturgical character. The procession winds through the town center from the mother church of San Nicola, accompanied by the notes of the Lizzano brass band, while the solemn holy mass brings together the faithful, parish groups, and civil authorities. In the evening, traditional bonfires are lit in the outlying neighborhoods in honor of the Saint, a ritual with deep roots in the folk culture of the Salento and the Ionian arc.
The Tavole di San Giuseppe is not just a religious moment, but an opportunity for the entire Lizzano community to come together. Creative workshops for younger generations, such as the Labcreativ promoted by parish educators and catechists, accompany the festivities and renew their meaning of sharing. For visitors, it is an opportunity to immerse themselves in an authentic Apulian tradition, amidst devotion, ancient flavors, and human warmth.
The 2026 edition confirmed the vitality of one of the town's most cherished traditions. On the evening of Wednesday, March 18th, starting at 6:00 PM, it was possible to visit the tables set up in various private homes and at the headquarters of the Confraternita della Misericordia (Piazza Matteotti), L'Albero Arcobaleno (Via Nazario Sauro, at the municipal library), and the Pro Loco (Corso Vittorio Emanuele).
On Thursday, March 19th, at 4:30 PM, the procession departed from the mother church of San Nicola through the city streets, accompanied by the Lizzano brass band, followed by the solemn holy mass at 6:00 PM. The festival was enriched by Labcreativ, a creative workshop organized by educators and catechists at the parish pastoral center.
The votive tables are set up in various homes and venues in the center of Lizzano (TA), including the Confraternita della Misericordia in Piazza Matteotti, the L'Albero Arcobaleno headquarters on Via Nazario Sauro, and the Pro Loco on Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The procession and mass take place at the mother church of San Nicola.
The festival is celebrated around March 19th, with visits to the tables beginning on the afternoon and evening of the eve.
