The votive tradition of March 19th in Piazza Cavour, Favara
The Tavolate di San Giuseppe are one of the most cherished traditions in Favara, in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. Each year, for the Solemnity of Saint Joseph on March 19th, Piazza Cavour becomes the beating heart of the festival: local schools, families, and the entire community set up characteristic votive tables, richly decorated with images of the Saint and the Holy Family. It is an event that weaves together religious devotion, popular memory, and a spirit of sharing.
The absolute stars of the tables are the votive breads, shaped by local bakers into symbolic forms linked to the Saint's cult, including the staff of the Saint Carpenter. Alongside the bread, students' families bring frittatas, traditional sweets, and many other typical dishes. The symbolic dish, however, remains the Saint Joseph soup, a hearty stew prepared in ten large callarune—traditional oversized pots—using various types of pasta, legumes, and vegetables: a humble yet generous dish that reflects the local peasant culture.
The event involves all levels of Favara's schools, from the three comprehensive institutes to the high school. Traditionally, students from the "Ambrosini-King" Institute are responsible for preparing the Saint Joseph soup. The eve of the festival, March 18th, is dedicated to celebrating local traditions at the Church of the Holy Rosary, involving schools and local artists in a moment of reflection on history, faith, and tradition.
The Tavolate are part of a broader program of religious and civic events: masses for students at the Mother Church, a procession with the statue of the Saint, a solemn Eucharistic concelebration with the blessing of the fathers, and finally, the blessing of the votive tables and the soup in Piazza Cavour, followed by a community meal. The collaboration of the Pro Loco, AIDO, and Lions Club reinforces the charitable nature of the festival.
In recent years, the tradition has taken on an international dimension: a delegation from Saarlouis, the German city twinned with Favara, participates in the celebrations, demonstrating how a local festival can become an opportunity for cultural exchange and connection between communities. The Tavolate di San Giuseppe thus remain a defining identity event for the town of Favara and all of Sicily, capable of uniting spirituality, traditional gastronomy, and social cohesion.
The 2026 edition of the Tavolate di San Giuseppe took place in Favara between March 18 and 19. The eve of March 18 opened the celebrations at the Church of the Holy Rosary with a mass, a cultural event titled "The Feast of Saint Joseph: History, Faith, and Traditions," and the procession of the statue toward the Mother Church.
On March 19, the day of the solemnity, schools set up votive tables in Piazza Cavour while masses for students were held at the Mother Church. In the evening, following the solemn Eucharistic concelebration presided over by Archpriest Father Nino Gulli, the tables and the soup were blessed. Approximately two thousand people took part in the community meal, enjoying votive breads, frittatas, and typical sweets. A highlight of this edition was the participation of a German delegation from Saarlouis, the city twinned with Favara, who were welcomed as guests of honor.
