Ten days of challenges, costume parades, and lively evenings in the square between the four districts of Tavarnelle.
The Tavarnelle District Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, a village in the Municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, in the heart of the Florentine Chianti, Tuscany. For nearly ten days, the town's historic center transforms into a large open-air stage, where the four districts that divide the town compete in a series of games, parades, shows, and convivial gatherings.
The four competing districts are Bosco alla Doccia, Fondaccio, Borghetto, and Centro. Each chooses a theme around which they build costumes, sets, choreography, and themed evenings, sparking a playful and deeply engaging rivalry that involves around a thousand citizens of all ages.
The District Festival has roots in a tradition that spans decades in Tavarnelle: joyful costume parades, cultural offerings, and plenty of fun have accompanied the town's summers for years. Following a relaunch strongly supported by the Barberino Tavarnelle municipal administration and Mayor David Baroncelli, who met with the four districts to bring the festival back to its former glory, the event has once again become a landmark for the Florentine Chianti community.
The festival traditionally opens with the costume parade of the four districts, as they enter the central square, each presenting their chosen theme. The following evenings feature shows, performances, and music inspired by the districts' themes, while the competitions represent the highlight of the event.
Alongside the challenges, the gastronomic evenings are an integral part of the festival: the district stalls offer the flavors of Chianti cuisine in a convivial atmosphere that brings residents and visitors together under the Tuscan summer stars. Strolling through the squares of Tavarnelle during the festival means breathing in the identity of a village that makes collective participation its hallmark.
The Tavarnelle District Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic and popular side of the Florentine Chianti, far from the main tourist routes and immersed in the real life of a Tuscan town. A free event, suitable for families and curious visitors, that combines tradition, entertainment, and great food in the Municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle.
The 2026 Tavarnelle District Festival kicks off on Friday, July 10 at 9:30 PM with the costume parade of the four districts, as they enter the central square, each presenting their chosen theme. The following evenings feature shows, performances, and music inspired by the districts' themes.
The competitions are the heart of the event: they will be held on Thursday, July 16 in Piazza Matteotti and Saturday, July 18 in Piazza della Repubblica, both at 9:30 PM. Among this year's new features is the district triathlon, a three-specialty circuit—skateboarding, sack racing, and wheelbarrow racing—which joins traditional games like the egg race and the bombarda competition.
The 2026 edition is organized by the District Committee in collaboration with the Barberino Tavarnelle municipal administration and with the support of ChiantiBanca.
