The great herring festival in the heart of Lent in Tamai di Brugnera
There are festivals that are born from the table and from family memories, and the Festa della Renga di Tamai is one of them. In the hamlet of Tamai, part of the Municipality of Brugnera in the province of Pordenone, the renga (smoked herring) has been the symbolic dish of Lent for generations: a humble, lean food that peasant Friulian cuisine has transformed into a specialty capable of attracting gourmets from all over the region.
The heart of the festival is naturally the herring, offered in five different versions: with garlic and parsley, with radicchio, with peppers, with onion, and with leek. Alongside the star dish are the great classics of Veneto-Friulian lean cuisine: bigoli in sauce, gnocchi with cod sauce, pasta and beans, stewed cuttlefish, grilled sea bass, paella, and mixed fried fish. The menus change from evening to evening, ensuring that those who return multiple times will always find something new. Takeaway service is also available.
The event takes place at the Tamai sports field, in an entirely covered and heated environment that allows you to comfortably enjoy the late winter evenings. There is no live music: here, as the organizers like to say, the kitchens "play," through the aromas and traditional recipes. The atmosphere is that of convivial and genuine village festivals, where you sit at the table with friends and rediscover the authentic taste of the territory.
Organized by Polisportiva Tamai with the support of the local community, the Festa della Renga is now a fixed event on the gastronomic calendar of Alto Friuli and the Pordenone area. Table reservations are recommended, to be made at least 24 hours in advance, while takeaway is always available without reservation.
The 24th edition of the Tamai Herring Festival takes place from February 18 to March 1, 2026, following the tradition of opening on Ash Wednesday. The kitchens offer herring in five variations (garlic and parsley, radicchio, peppers, onion, leek) and a rich selection of lean dishes that changes every evening.
