Masks, parades, and popular traditions between Ortigia and the historic center
The Syracuse Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events in the capital of southeastern Sicily. Unlike the major Sicilian carnivals famous for their monumental floats, the Syracuse edition retains a distinctly popular and family-friendly atmosphere. The stars of the show are the masked processions, costumed groups, and especially the children, who enliven the streets of the historic center and the island of Ortigia with costumes, music, and joy.
The festivities are concentrated on the traditional Carnival days: Fat Thursday, Carnival Sunday, and Shrove Tuesday. A special place is reserved for the school parade, the true heart of the city's celebration, which involves students from local comprehensive schools in a grand, colorful procession through the streets of the center. Each class marches with its own theme, accompanied by entertainers and mascots.
Masks take over the pedestrian streets and squares of the center: from Corso Gelone to Piazza della Vittoria, all the way to the Baroque alleys of Ortigia around Via Duomo and Piazza Minerva. There are no fenced-off circuits: the Syracuse Carnival is experienced on foot, strolling among the processions, with spontaneous entertainment spilling into the city's bars and squares.
Promoted by the Municipality of Syracuse, in the province of Syracuse, Sicily, the Carnival is a shared celebration involving schools, associations, and families. More than just a tourist spectacle, it is a local tradition that renews the community's bond with its Sicilian roots every yearโa time of masks, pranks, and a break from daily routines before the arrival of Lent.
The 2026 Syracuse Carnival brought the historic center to life on February 12, 15, and 17, with masked processions and costumed groups. The most anticipated moment was the school parade: initially postponed due to bad weather, it took place on February 16. The procession of children, starting from the school field, reached Piazza Santa Lucia, passing through Corso Gelone, Via Di Natale, Piazza della Vittoria, Viale Cadorna, and Via Ragusa. Students from local schools took part in the event, each with their own theme, accompanied by entertainers and mascots. The festival was promoted by the Municipality of Syracuse.
