About Surano Patronal Festivals

From August 14th to 17th, Surano, a small village in the lower Salento area of the Lecce province, celebrates its Patron Saints with one of the most heartfelt patronal festivals in the Apulian hinterland. Processions featuring the relics of the Martyrs of Otranto, the Madonna Assunta, and Saint Roch, along with historic center illuminations, band concerts, folk music, pizzica, and food stalls serving Salento specialties, bring the village to life in a blend of faith, folklore, and conviviality that unites the entire community.

The Surano Patronal Festivals

Every year in mid-August, the village of Suranoโ€”home to just over 1,500 residents in the heart of lower Salento, in the province of Lecceโ€”transforms to host its Patronal Festivals. From August 14th to 17th, the streets of the historic center fill with illuminations, music, and the aroma of Salento cuisine, marking one of the most authentic and well-attended celebrations in the Apulian hinterland.

Three Patron Saints, One Community

What makes Surano unique is its three Patron Saints, celebrated on consecutive days:

  • August 14th โ€” Holy Martyrs of Otranto: Festivities open in honor of the 800 citizens of Otranto who, in 1480, chose martyrdom over renouncing their Christian faith. According to tradition, a man from Surano was among them, which is why the town maintains a deep bond with the Martyrs.
  • August 15th โ€” Madonna Assunta: Affectionately called the "Madonna of the Cholera" here, as popular devotion credits her with liberating the village from an epidemic.
  • August 16th โ€” Saint Roch: The pilgrim saint and protector against the plague, highly venerated throughout Salento.

August 17th concludes the cycle with the festival of the Patron Saints and an evening concert in Piazza SS. Martiri d'Otranto, the town's main square.

Religious Rites and Processions

The heart of the festival remains its religious dimension: celebrations open with solemn masses and culminate in processions, where the relics and sacred images of the Saints are carried through the alleys of the historic center amidst prayers, hymns, and the devoted participation of the locals. The village streets are adorned with traditional illuminations, and a brass band accompanies the passage of the statues.

Music, Pizzica, and Fireworks

Alongside the sacred rites, the secular program fills the evenings: live concerts, pizzica performances, folk dances, and the inevitable fireworks that close each day of the festival. The final concert on August 17th in the square is the most anticipated moment for the community and for the many who return to the village for the occasion.

The Flavors of Salento

During the festival evenings, food stalls offer specialties of Salento cuisine: fried pittule, friselle, grilled meat, traditional desserts, and local wines, all to be enjoyed while strolling among the stalls and illuminations.

An Authentic Village

Surano is one of the most genuine villages in Salento, with its ancient alleys, the 17th-century Church of Maria Santissima Assunta, and a strong sense of community. The Patronal Festivals are the perfect opportunity to discover this corner of Puglia away from the beaten tourist paths, immersing yourself in traditions passed down from generation to generation.
