Four days of devotion, music, and Salento traditions through the alleys of Surano
Every year in mid-August, the village of Suranoโhome to just over 1,500 residents in the heart of lower Salento, in the province of Lecceโtransforms to host its Patronal Festivals. From August 14th to 17th, the streets of the historic center fill with illuminations, music, and the aroma of Salento cuisine, marking one of the most authentic and well-attended celebrations in the Apulian hinterland.
What makes Surano unique is its three Patron Saints, celebrated on consecutive days:
August 17th concludes the cycle with the festival of the Patron Saints and an evening concert in Piazza SS. Martiri d'Otranto, the town's main square.
The heart of the festival remains its religious dimension: celebrations open with solemn masses and culminate in processions, where the relics and sacred images of the Saints are carried through the alleys of the historic center amidst prayers, hymns, and the devoted participation of the locals. The village streets are adorned with traditional illuminations, and a brass band accompanies the passage of the statues.
Alongside the sacred rites, the secular program fills the evenings: live concerts, pizzica performances, folk dances, and the inevitable fireworks that close each day of the festival. The final concert on August 17th in the square is the most anticipated moment for the community and for the many who return to the village for the occasion.
During the festival evenings, food stalls offer specialties of Salento cuisine: fried pittule, friselle, grilled meat, traditional desserts, and local wines, all to be enjoyed while strolling among the stalls and illuminations.
Surano is one of the most genuine villages in Salento, with its ancient alleys, the 17th-century Church of Maria Santissima Assunta, and a strong sense of community. The Patronal Festivals are the perfect opportunity to discover this corner of Puglia away from the beaten tourist paths, immersing yourself in traditions passed down from generation to generation.
The 2026 Surano Patronal Festivals return from August 14th to 17th with the usual blend of religious rites and secular events. August 14th celebrates the Holy Martyrs of Otranto, the 15th the Madonna Assunta, the 16th Saint Roch, and the 17th the final feast of the Patron Saints. Processions with sacred images wind through the historic center amidst illuminations and prayers, while evenings are enlivened by concerts, folk music, and fireworks.
