Summer evenings within the walls of the ancient Vestini city, in the municipality of Prata d'Ansidonia
Sunset at Peltuinum is a festival that brings performances and events to the Peltuinum archaeological site in the municipality of Prata d'Ansidonia, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, throughout July and August. Every Thursday evening, the ancient Vestini city comes alive with theater, live music, storytelling, and aperitifs, with the Roman ruins serving as a natural backdrop suspended between past and present.
Peltuinum was a Roman city built along the Via Claudia Nova, occupying a dominant position on the Navelli plateau with views toward the peaks of the Gran Sasso. The ancient center still features its walls, the western gate, the remains of a theater located outside the walls on the southern side, and traces of a Corinthian-style temple. This setting, one of the most evocative in Abruzzo, frames the festival evenings: sunset over the ruins has long been one of the most anticipated moments of the local summer.
The festival, which offers free admission, features a varied calendar that blends different genres and styles:
The organizers' goal is to forge a connection between visitors and the land, enhancing historical and cultural heritage through immersive experiences during the most beautiful hour of the day.
Sunset at Peltuinum was launched in 2023 by the Pro Loco of Prata d'Ansidonia with the aim of bringing life and audiences back to a site of great archaeological value that was otherwise rarely visited on summer evenings. The free entry and the weekly Thursday schedule have made the festival a staple for residents and visitors to the L'Aquila area, helping to make Peltuinum known far beyond the municipal borders.
Those who arrive at Peltuinum at sunset discover a double spectacle: the one on stage and the one offered by the landscape, as the Navelli plain and the Gran Sasso massif are painted in shades of pink and orange. It is a perfect opportunity to combine culture, nature, and conviviality in one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in inland Abruzzo.
The 2026 program of Sunset at Peltuinum confirms the Thursday evening formula, with events ranging from family theater to live music. Announced events include the play L'Isola dei Pirati by I Guardiani dell'Oca (Thursday, August 7, 2026) and the Pink Floyd tribute concert Floyd on The Wing (Thursday, August 13, 2026), both set among the ruins of Peltuinum at sunset. The same space also hosts other evening concerts in the summer of 2026, such as the live performance by Anna Von Hausswolff (August 10), which requires a ticket. The Pro Loco festival remains free of charge; it is recommended to check the official channels for the complete and updated program.
The festival continues every Thursday from July 20 to August 31 with further performances, storytelling, and sunset aperitifs. The same space also hosts the concert by Anna Von Hausswolff (August 10, 2026, ticket required).
Events are held at the Peltuinum archaeological site, in the Civita Ansidonia area, in the municipality of Prata d'Ansidonia (AQ), approximately 25 km from L'Aquila.
By car: from L'Aquila, reach Prata d'Ansidonia by taking the state road towards the Navelli plateau; the site is signposted near the hamlet of Civita Ansidonia. A car is recommended due to the rural location of the site.
Free admission. Evenings take place at sunset, generally from late afternoon onwards; some concerts hosted in the same space may require a ticket. It is advisable to check the times and program on the festival's official channels before each evening.
Wear comfortable clothing and bring a light jacket for cooler evenings: the altitude of the plateau makes the nights pleasant even in the height of summer.
