The Ferragosto artisanal bread festival in San Demetrio ne' Vestini
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Bread and Wheat Festival is a highly anticipated summer event in San Demetrio ne' Vestini, a small town in the province of L'Aquila nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo mountains, just a stone's throw from the picturesque Lake Sinizzo. The event, organized by the Pro Loco in collaboration with the Municipality of San Demetrio ne' Vestini, takes place every year around Ferragosto, transforming the village's historic center into a large open-air workshop dedicated to artisanal bread and grain culture.
The initiative was created to showcase the rich baking tradition of San Demetrio, where the presence of numerous ovens has made bread a true symbol of local identity. The heart of the festival is the famous San Demetrio bread, kneaded with special Senatore Cappelli wheat flour, an ancient variety that is highly prized. Tastings, demonstrations, and a culinary trail designed to rediscover the genuine flavors of Abruzzo cuisine revolve around this product.
At the food stands set up in the historic center, you can sample specialties that combine bread with the region's finest products:
Beyond the gastronomy, the Bread and Wheat Festival offers several evenings of live music and, late at night, an open-air disco that brings the village streets to life until the early hours. The event involves various local districts and associations, attracting visitors not only from the province of L'Aquila but from all over Abruzzo, and has become one of the most iconic festivals of the local Ferragosto.
San Demetrio ne' Vestini offers visitors a charming natural setting: the village is known for the nearby Lake Sinizzo and its karst caves, ideal destinations to combine with a day of festivities. The combination of landscape, rural tradition, and hospitality makes this festival an authentic opportunity to discover the inland Abruzzo region.
The organizers of the Bread and Wheat Festival in San Demetrio ne' Vestini have not yet published the official dates and program for the 2026 edition. The festival is traditionally held during the Ferragosto period, in mid-August, and reaffirms year after year the village's bond with artisanal baking and Senatore Cappelli wheat flour. Information will be updated as soon as the 2026 calendar is announced by the Pro Loco and the Municipality.
The festival is held in the historic center of San Demetrio ne' Vestini (AQ), with food stands located along the village streets and squares.
San Demetrio ne' Vestini can be reached by car from L'Aquila in about 20 minutes; from the A24/A25 motorway, take the Bussi-Popoli or L'Aquila Est exit. Lake Sinizzo and the karst caves are located nearby.
Information is available from the Municipality and the Pro Loco of San Demetrio ne' Vestini (tel. 0862 810834, [email protected]) and on the official Facebook page of the event.
