Literature, music, and street art in the village of Civitaretenga
The Festival of Popular Narratives is a cultural festival held in Civitaretenga, a small hamlet in the municipality of Navelli, in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. The event transforms the 17th-century Convent of Sant'Antonio into a space for the intersection of literature, music, urban art, collective memory, and participation. Conceived and curated by the literary magazine TerraNullius, which has been exploring the relationship between narratives and civilization for over two decades, the festival is not an isolated event but, as founder Luca Moretti likes to repeat, "a continuous path with the community."
Civitaretenga stands at an altitude of about 850 meters on the Navelli plateau, in a strategic position between L'Aquila and Sulmona. Despite the damage from the earthquakes of 1703 and 2009, the village has preserved its original architectural appearance. Over the years, it has become famous as the "Village of Stamps": thanks to the numerous murals created with the a.DNA association, its houses have been transformed into an open-air street art museum. Walking through the alleys, you will encounter works dedicated to writers and local stories, including a mural paying homage to the Italian-American writer Pietro di Donato.
Each edition offers a rich calendar that combines different languages:
Admission is free, and events are concentrated in the late afternoon and evening, when the convent and the village alleys come alive with the public.
The Festival of Popular Narratives is much more than a literary review: it is a cultural regeneration project that focuses on the future of small Abruzzo villages, the enhancement of popular memory, and the role of communities as guardians of stories. The convent also houses a guesthouse managed by the Oro Rosso Community Cooperative, which produces the precious saffron of the plateau. For those visiting the province of L'Aquila in the summer, the festival is an authentic opportunity to discover a vibrant and imaginative inland Abruzzo.
The fourth edition of the Festival of Popular Narratives is held from August 7 to 9, 2026, at the Convent of Sant'Antonio in Civitaretenga, a hamlet of Navelli (AQ), with events starting at 5:00 PM and free admission. This year's theme pays special attention to female narratives and cultural productions, which run through the entire program with meetings, performances, and moments of discussion.
The festival opens with the storytelling performance La notte in cui si fecero uomini by Nada Rosa, with music by Marco Bandera, which recounts an ancient rite of passage from the Abruzzo lands. Among the most anticipated literary moments are the presentation of Lo Sbilico by Alcide Pierantozzi (Bergamo Prize winner, finalist for the Campiello and Strega Prizes) and L'invenzione del colore by Christian Raimo, semi-finalist for the Strega Prize. The program also includes the talk "From the Village of Stamps to the Imaginative Abruzzo. Mural painting and urban art in comparison," workshops, nature tours, and new street art interventions with the a.DNA association, as well as live music and tastings of typical products every evening.
Civitaretenga is a hamlet of the Municipality of Navelli (AQ), on the Navelli plateau. By car, it can be reached from the A25 motorway (Bussi/Popoli exit) or the SS17; it is about 30 minutes from L'Aquila. The nearest train station is in L'Aquila, then continue by car or bus.
Free admission to all events. The events take place at the Convent of Sant'Antonio and in the village alleys, generally from the late afternoon (from 5:00 PM) until the evening.
Comfortable clothing is recommended for the narrative walks, as well as a flashlight for moving around the village in the evening. Don't miss the tastings of typical products and the Navelli saffron.
