The long summer devotional cycle of Panni, featuring processions, wheat sheaves, and folk festivals in the Daunian Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Panni, a village of fewer than a thousand souls clinging to the Daunian Mountains in the northern province of Foggia, the patronal feast is not just a single day, but an entire season. Dedicated to the town's two patrons, Saint Costanzo the Martyr and the Madonna del Bosco, it unfolds throughout the summer, following an ancient rite that marks the community's life and renews its identity every year. It is the most heartfelt event of the year, drawing back emigrants and the children of Panni scattered across Italy and the world.
Everything revolves around the 17th-century Sanctuary and Convent of the Madonna del Bosco, nestled in the greenery on the slopes of Mount Crispignano, just outside the village. This is where the venerated statue of the Virgin is kept, her throne entirely adorned with gold necklaces, bracelets, and rings donated over time by the faithful as votive offerings for graces received. The devotion is centuries old: the Madonna del Bosco was solemnly crowned on August 27, 1894, a date that still marks the climax of the festivities today.
The religious calendar begins on June 24th, when the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession from the sanctuary in the woods to the Mother Church of the Assumption in the heart of the village, where it remains throughout the summer. The devotion reaches its peak at the end of August:
On the day of the Assumption, August 15th, one of the village's most evocative and beloved traditions is celebrated: the Festa delle Spighe (Festival of the Wheat Sheaves). It reenacts the ancient peasant custom of offering a portion of the harvest to the patron saints as a sign of gratitude. The day begins at dawn, around 8:00 AM, with a display of ancestral arts and crafts and a demonstration of traditional wheat harvesting. Numerous carts are decorated with wheat sheaves in the most imaginative ways and paraded through the village streets, accompanied by a procession in period costumes with donkeys laden with wheat; the event concludes with a horseback ride.
Alongside the religious moments, the village comes alive throughout the festivities with a rich calendar of secular events: sports tournaments, the 'Corrida' village talent show, cabaret and folk music evenings, food festivals featuring local specialties, craft exhibitions, and evening dances that involve both young people and families. It is the time when the streets of the historic center and the viewpoints overlooking the Cervaro Valley fill with people, lights, and the aromas of Daunian cuisine.
Those who travel to Panni for the festival find much more than just a food fair: the village, whose name is traced back to the god Pan of the mountains and woods, is an authentic viewpoint over the Daunian Mountains. Among the alleys, you will find the Mother Church of the Assumption, historic fountains, Palazzo Manuppelli, and the remains of the ancient tower, while from the Toppolo Belvedere, the view sweeps over the Cervaro Valley and Mount Crispignano. Its elevated position makes Panni a small capital of free flight and paragliding in Puglia. A setting that makes the patronal feast a perfect opportunity to discover one of the most authentic corners of the Daunian Sub-Apennines.
The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. True to tradition, the cycle of festivities is expected to unfold throughout the summer, with the devotional heart at the end of August; the detailed program will be published by the Municipality of Panni and the Parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
At the moment, the organizers have not yet released the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Panni patronal feast. Following the established pattern of previous years, the festivities should include the transfer of the Madonna's statue from the sanctuary in the woods to the Mother Church in late June, the evocative Festa delle Spighe on August 15th, and the solemn processions for San Costanzo and the Madonna del Bosco in late August, concluding with the return of the statue to the sanctuary.
This page will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Panni and the Parish release the official calendar with dates, times, and secular and religious appointments.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Panni (province of Foggia, Puglia) and at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Bosco, on the slopes of Mount Crispignano.
The cycle extends from late June (transfer of the statue) to late August; the Festa delle Spighe is on August 15th, the patronal processions on August 26th-27th, and the return of the statue to the sanctuary on August 28th.
Panni can be reached by car from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (nearest exit towards the Daunian Sub-Apennines) or from the SS90 state road. The village is in the Daunian Mountains, in the mountainous hinterland of the province of Foggia; traveling by car is recommended, as public transport connections are limited.
Participation in religious rites and public events is free.
