About Summer at the Castle

Every summer, the Castello dell'Abate, a 1123 fortress overlooking the village of Castellabate, transforms into an open-air theatre. Summer at the Castle is the cultural festival promoted by the Municipality that, between July and August, brings together theatrical performances, cultural salons with famous guests, brass band concerts, and evenings of classical and jazz music. A programme designed for residents and visitors alike, in the heart of one of the most beautiful villages in the Cilento region, in the province of Salerno.

Summer at the Castle: culture and performance in the fortress of Castellabate

Summer at the Castle is the summer festival that brings the Castello dell'Abate to life every yearโ€”the manor that gives its name to the town of Castellabate, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Promoted by the municipal administration, the event occupies the courtyard and interior spaces of the castle between July and August, turning them into an open-air stage overlooking the Gulf of Salerno.

A 1123 castle as a stage

The Castello dell'Abate was built in 1123 by Saint Costabile Gentilcore to defend the territory and the population from Saracen raids: hence the name Castrum Abbatis, which later became Castellabate. The structure preserves its curtain walls with four corner towers and encloses a medieval village made of stone alleys, passages under houses, and underground tunnels that, according to tradition, allowed for an escape route to the beach of Santa Maria. The castle is open to visitors all year round and is now one of the iconic landmarks of the Cilento region.

Bringing cultural programming within these walls is not just a scenic choice: the administration presents it as an investment in culture and tourism, aimed at enhancing one of the area's symbolic sites and making it a living space for the community.

What to see at Summer at the Castle

The programme is intentionally multidisciplinary, alternating between drama, music, and meetings. Recent editions have featured:

  • Theatre: comedies and dramas performed by local companies and the Bottega Teatrale;
  • Cultural salons with actors, journalists, and well-known figures in dialogue with the audience;
  • Brass band concerts featuring local ensembles;
  • Classical music, tango, and jazz, as well as flute orchestra concerts;
  • Readings and literary meetings, including evenings dedicated to the Divine Comedy.

Performances are usually held in the evening, when the temperature drops and the upper village fills with visitors.

The 2026 edition

In the 2026 cultural calendar presented by the Municipality of Castellabate, Summer at the Castle is confirmed as one of the established events and will take place as usual between July and August, featuring performances by the Bottega Teatrale, jazz events, and classical music evenings. As of the writing of this entry, the detailed programme, including dates and titles of individual performances, has not yet been published: it is therefore advisable to check the updated calendar on the official channels of the Municipality.

The festival is part of a broader summer programme, which also includes Arena in Villa at Villa Matarazzo, the travelling festival ColtoCircuito, the Sea Festival, and the musical marathon Ond'A Marina.

Castellabate, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy

Castellabate is one of the most visited centres in Cilento: it is part of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" network and is located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The seaside hamlets of Santa Maria and San Marco offer beaches, marinas, and waterfront venues, while the upper village preserves its medieval layout and famous viewpoints over the gulf. The town's popular fame also owes much to cinema, as several highly successful comedies were filmed right here.

Attending a show inside the Castello dell'Abate means combining a cultural evening with the discovery of a village that, in summer, remains lively until late at night with its restaurants, artisan shops, and scenic squares. It is one of the most successful formulas with which the Cilento region attempts to offer a continuous cultural programme alongside its seaside appeal.

Summer at the Castle โ€” edition 2026

The Municipality of Castellabate has confirmed Summer at the Castle for 2026: between July and August, the Castello dell'Abate will once again host performances by the Bottega Teatrale, jazz events, and classical music evenings. The detailed programme, including dates and titles, has not yet been released: updates will be published on the municipal official channels during the season.

In the 2026 events calendar presented by the Municipality of Castellabate, Summer at the Castle is listed among the established summer events, alongside the Sea Festival, ColtoCircuito, and the Arena in Villa series. The Castello dell'Abate remains the cultural hub active between July and August, with a programme ranging from Bottega Teatrale performances to jazz concerts and classical music evenings.

Available sources do not yet indicate precise dates or titles for the 2026 edition. For this reason, this entry provides an indicative period: those wishing to plan their evening are invited to consult the Municipality of Castellabate's website or social media channels, where the programme is usually released shortly before the festival begins.

In 2026, the formula is expected to remain the same: open-air evenings in the castle spaces, in the upper village of Castellabate, in the province of Salerno, with evening start times and a mixed audience of residents and tourists holidaying in the Cilento region.
