The Giostra della Jaletta is one of the most original and distinctive historical re-enactments in Puglia. It takes place in San Marco la Catola, a village in the Monti Dauni area of the Foggia province, traditionally on August 20th, the day after the feast of the patron saint, San Liberato Martire. The event unfolds beneath the walls of the Palazzo Ducale, the ancient heart of the town, transforming the village streets into an open-air theater animated by horses, costumes, and spectators divided by district.
According to tradition, the Giostra has roots in the late medieval period, when the local population organized chivalric games to entertain the feudal lord. The name comes from the jaletta (in the local dialect u joc da jalรจtt): a wooden stave tub with a ring-shaped slot underneath. The jaletta is filled with water and suspended by a rope between two balconies overlooking the street.
The challenge involves four knights for each of the seven districts of the town. Galloping along the course, the knights must thread the rod (in dialect a vรฉrja) into the slot beneath the jaletta, while avoiding spilling the water on themselves. The score varies based on the horse's gait at the moment of the strike:
The district that accumulates the most points wins, amidst the enthusiasm of the supporters cheering for their knights, recognizable by their colorful costumes.
The town comes alive from the morning with a historical pageant parading through the village streets: costumed figures, flag-wavers, musicians, and historical groups from various towns in Southern Italy accompany the district knights. In the afternoon, the action begins with the competitions, sometimes preceded by demonstrations like the Palio delle oche (Goose Palio), concluding with the winners' parade and evening shows.
Nestled among the hills of the Monti Dauni, San Marco la Catola is a small municipality in the province of Foggia that preserves a historical and landscape heritage of great charm, from the Palazzo Ducale to the nearby Convent of Santa Maria di Giosafat. The Giostra della Jaletta represents the quintessential identity event for the community and one of the most anticipated summer happenings in the hinterland of Puglia, attracting visitors curious to discover a tradition unmatched in the region.
