The evening road race in the hills of Montale, blending sport with solidarity
The Sudatina Montalese is one of the most cherished running events of the summer in the town of Montale, located in the heart of Tuscany's Pistoia province. Each year, in the second half of June, hundreds of runners and enthusiasts gather to take on a race that has become a local tradition: a competitive 10-kilometer test that winds through the constant climbs and descents of the Montale hills—a course described by participants as "beautiful but demanding."
The event was established in 2008 by the Croce d'Oro Montale Running Group and has since grown to attract over 500 participants. It is more than just a race: the Sudatina is part of the Volunteer Festival (Festa del Volontariato) organized by the Croce d'Oro, with the start line located on Via delle Foibe. It is also deeply linked to AVIS (the Italian Blood Volunteers Association). The race awards the AVIS Montale Trophy, dedicated to the culture of blood donation, and honors the memory of Alessandro Ciani with a dedicated memorial.
The competitive 10 km track challenges runners' legs with its elevation changes, while rewarding them with stunning views of the Pistoia Apennines and the countryside surrounding Montale. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there is a shorter, non-competitive route for walkers, making the evening accessible to families and enthusiasts of all levels.
The evening start, around 8:00 PM, turns the race into a collective celebration. The finish line is located within the Volunteer Festival area, where the event continues with refreshments, awards ceremonies, and socializing. Among the most anticipated awards are the Maurizio Fiori Special Prize, given to the youngest runner, and various category awards. The event is held under the auspices of the UISP and CSI committees of Pistoia and is supported by the Municipality of Montale.
The Sudatina Montalese perfectly captures the spirit of "lesser-known" Tuscany: a community gathering around sport, volunteering, and solidarity on a June evening that stays in the hearts of all who participate.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Montale hosted another great edition of the Sudatina Montalese, held as the 14th AVIS Trophy – Alessandro Ciani Memorial. With over 500 participants, the event once again highlighted the strong bond between sport, the local area, and solidarity.
The 10 km competitive race wound through the challenging climbs and descents of the Montale hills, while walkers enjoyed a shorter, dedicated route. The event was organized by the Croce d'Oro and Aurora Montale, with the collaboration of AVIS and the Municipality of Montale, under the auspices of the Pistoia UISP and CSI committees.
The race is valid as the 14th AVIS Trophy – Alessandro Ciani Memorial. Awards include the "Maurizio Fiori" Special Prize for the youngest runner.
Montale is located in the Province of Pistoia, along the route between Pistoia and Prato. By car, it can be reached from the Prato Ovest or Prato Est exits (A11 Firenze-Mare motorway), following signs for Montale. By train, the Montale-Agliana station is served by the Florence-Pistoia-Viareggio line. The meeting point and start line are on Via delle Foibe, at the Volunteer Festival area.
Registration for the competitive race is handled by the organizers. For information: Gruppo Podistico Croce d'Oro Montale, email [email protected], or contact Samuele at +39 347 373 7884 or Sergio at +39 338 469 7182.
Evening start: we recommend appropriate running gear and trail or road shoes to handle the hilly terrain. Refreshments are available at the finish line within the Volunteer Festival area.
