The ultramarathon that circles Lake Trasimeno
The Strasimeno is the ultramarathon of Lake Trasimeno, starting and finishing in Castiglione del Lago, in the province of Perugia. The idea is simple and fascinating: to run the entire perimeter of the lake, 58 kilometers that pass through the most beautiful villages and landscapes of the area. Born in the early 2000s, it has become one of the most anticipated events in the running calendar of central Italy.
The Strasimeno is not just for ultramarathoners. In addition to the 58 km that completes the full lap, the program offers a marathon (42.195 km), a half marathon (21.097 km), a 34 km race, and a 10 km race, each with its own finish line in one of the lakeside villages. Alongside the competitive races, there are also non-competitive walks over shorter distances, open to those who want to experience the lake at a relaxed pace.
One of the most evocative moments is the night start: walkers for the longer distances set off in the dead of night, with torches and lanterns, from Lido Arezzo in Castiglione del Lago, to enjoy the sunrise over the Trasimeno along the route. The classic races start in the morning. An event that combines sport, landscape, and the hospitality of the lakeside comuni of the Trasimeno area.
The XXIV edition of "Strasimeno - The Lake Ultramarathon" will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, in a record-breaking edition with over 3,000 participants: more than 1,700 athletes in the five competitive distances and over 1,300 walkers. The previous day, Saturday, March 7, bibs, t-shirts, and commemorative medals will be distributed, and in the afternoon, the Strasimeno Young races will take place.
Walkers for the longer distances (34 and 58 km) will start in the dead of night, at 5:15 AM, from Lido Arezzo, with torches and lanterns. The five classic races will kick off at 9:15 AM.
The competitive course alternates between asphalt and unpaved cycle path sections along the lake perimeter.
Castiglione del Lago (PG) is located on Lake Trasimeno. By car, take the Bettolle-Perugia junction; by train, the station is on the Florence-Rome line. The start is at Lido Arezzo; the finishes for the various distances are spread across the lakeside comuni (Tuoro, Passignano, San Feliciano, Sant'Arcangelo).
Registration for competitive races and walks is online through the event's official channels. Bibs and race packs will be distributed the day before the race.
