The Gessopalena running race combining sport, music, and celebration
StraGesso is the road running event of Gessopalena, a small village perched in the hinterland of the Province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. Established in 2025 through the efforts of the local administration and community associations, the event blends sport with village festivities, transforming the historic center's streets into a race course filled with athletes, families, and spectators for an afternoon.
The competitive race covers a distance of 8.5 km, consisting of three identical 2.85 km laps starting and finishing in Piazza Roma. The route, characterized by the constant ups and downs typical of Abruzzo's hillside villages, is challenging yet suitable for both competitive runners and amateurs. Alongside the main race, there is a 3 km fun run for those who prefer a non-competitive pace, as well as several youth races on a shorter course for children.
StraGesso is much more than a sporting event. Once the races conclude, the center of Gessopalena comes alive with award ceremonies, food stalls serving local specialties, and live music that keeps the evening going late into the night. It is a community-building occasion that involves the entire town and showcases one of the most picturesque villages in the eastern Maiella, famous for its unique historic center built from gypsum.
The event is part of the regional CorrilAbruzzo circuit, which brings together the main road running races in Abruzzo and attracts runners from across the region. It is organized by ASD Vini Fantini in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Gessopalena and supported by the Municipality of Gessopalena.
StraGesso is traditionally held in late May. The inaugural edition took place on May 31, 2025, while the second edition was held on May 23, 2026. It has become a highly anticipated event that combines a passion for running with the discovery of the Chieti province.
The second edition of StraGesso was held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in the center of Gessopalena, in the Province of Chieti. The event maintained its proven format: an 8.5 km competitive race consisting of three 2.85 km laps starting and finishing in Piazza Roma, a 3 km fun run, and youth races on a shorter course.
As an event valid for the regional CorrilAbruzzo circuit, StraGesso 2026 saw the participation of numerous Abruzzo running clubs, including Podistica Vasto. After the races, the focus shifted to award ceremonies, food stalls, and music, creating an evening of celebration that brought the village to life.
Gessopalena can be reached by car from the A25 (Torre de' Passeri exit) or the A14 (Val di Sangro exit), continuing along the inland roads toward the Chieti hinterland. The nearest train station is in Chieti, from which you can continue by car or local bus connections.
Participation in the competitive race requires a modest entry fee (in the inaugural edition, €7.00 for adults and €3.00 for youth). Registration is handled by the organizers; it is recommended to check the specific procedures and deadlines on the channels of ASD Vini Fantini, the Pro Loco of Gessopalena, and the CorrilAbruzzo circuit.
The meeting point and start line are in Piazza Roma. Bring appropriate clothing for road running with elevation changes. After the race, stay for the food stalls and music: it is well worth experiencing the village festivities.
