The Stelvio Pass road reserved for cyclists
The Stilfserjoch Radtag / Stelvio Bike Day is one of the most beloved cycling events in the Alps. Every year at the end of August, the road leading up to the Stelvio Pass (2,758 m), one of the highest paved mountain passes in the Alps, is closed to motor vehicles and reserved entirely for cyclists. The event takes place in the municipality of Prato allo Stelvio / Prad am Stilfserjoch, in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Stelvio National Park, in Trentino-South Tyrol.
The climb from Prato allo Stelvio (approx. 910 m) to the summit spans about 25 kilometers with an elevation gain of nearly 1,850 meters and the famous 48 hairpin bends made immortal by the Giro d'Italia, where the Stelvio Pass is often crowned the Cima Coppi as the highest point of the race. For one day, this spectacular landscape of rock, glaciers, and 360-degree panoramas belongs only to two wheels.
Stelvio Bike Day is not a competition and requires no registration: anyone who wishes can ride up to the pass on their own bike, at their own pace, following the motto "the important thing is to be there." The road is closed to cars from the section above Trafoi to the summit, allowing for a safe ascent. The event is organized on the South Tyrolean side by the Stelvio National Park Office in collaboration with the Prato allo Stelvio Tourist Association, while on the Lombardy and Swiss sides, the day involves Bormio, Valtellina, and the Umbrail Pass.
The day is not just about cycling: in Prato allo Stelvio, the atmosphere is that of a true village festival, with breakfast in the square, official event merchandise for sale, and the Stelvio Bike Festival, featuring Tyrolean gastronomic specialties and live music at the aquaprad visitor center. It is an opportunity to combine sport with the discovery of the traditions and flavors of the upper Val Venosta.
Climbing the Stelvio on a car-free day means authentically experiencing one of the most evocative corners of the Italian Alps, between the Ortler glaciers and the high-altitude pastures of the Stelvio National Park. An event that unites thousands of enthusiasts from all over Europe and represents a symbol of slow and sustainable tourism for the Trentino-South Tyrol region.
The 2026 edition of the Stelvio Bike Day, the 24th, is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026. The recommended departure from Prato allo Stelvio is between 6:30 AM and 10:30 AM, with no mass start: everyone sets off at their own pace. The road remains closed to cars from the section above Trafoi to the Stelvio Pass from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
