About Ortler Bike Marathon

The Ortler Bike Marathon is the great mountain bike celebration in the Upper Vinschgau Valley, in the province of Bolzano. It is not a timed race, but a non-competitive cycling rally — the "Inser Volksradltog" — starting and finishing in Glorenza/Glurns. Each biker chooses their own route among the marked trails at the foot of the Ortler, collects stamps at checkpoints, and earns a gold, silver, or bronze medal. An event open to everyone, including families, in the heart of the South Tyrolean Alps.

The Ortler Bike Marathon: cycling at the foot of the Ortler

The Ortler Bike Marathon is one of the most beloved events for mountain bike enthusiasts in South Tyrol. Set in the Upper Vinschgau Valley, in the far west of the Trentino-South Tyrol region, the event takes place amidst the high-altitude landscapes that open up at the foot of the Ortler, the highest peak in South Tyrol. Organized by the ASV Ortler Bike Marathon based in Malles Venosta/Mals, the rally attracts hundreds of cyclists from across the Alps every year.

Not a race, but a celebration: the "Inser Volksradltog"

The unique feature of the Ortler Bike Marathon is its format: it is not a timed competition, but a non-competitive cycling rally, known in the local dialect as "Inser Volksradltog" (our popular bike day). The route is not closed to traffic, and each participant can start whenever they prefer after picking up their race pack. Along the marked trails, there are several stamping stations: those who reach them all without using ski lifts win the gold medal, those who touch more than three (even with the help of cable cars) earn silver, and those who reach at least one get bronze.

The routes

The main route winds through the Upper Vinschgau Valley with challenging climbs and breathtaking views towards Lake Resia, Lake San Valentino alla Muta, and the Mazia Valley. The proposed variations range from the toughest, covering about 115 km with nearly 4000 meters of elevation gain, to shorter routes suitable for families and children. Thanks to the collaboration with local ski lifts, bikers can overcome the steepest ramps by using the area's cable cars.

  • Long route: approx. 115 km and 3905 m elevation gain (gold medal)
  • Intermediate route: approx. 107 km, reduced elevation gain thanks to lifts
  • Short route: approx. 58 km, also suitable for less trained cyclists
  • Two short tracks designed for families and children

The territory: Glorenza and the Upper Vinschgau Valley

The start and finish are set in the town of Glorenza/Glurns, one of the smallest cities in the Alps, famous for its intact medieval walls. Surrounding it is the Upper Vinschgau Valley, a land of apple orchards, alpine lakes, and ancient paths, dominated by the Ortler massif. The race pack includes access to several ski lifts, meal vouchers, and a finisher's medal, turning the day into a true experience of discovering the territory.

An event for everyone

Founded in 2017, the Ortler Bike Marathon has established itself as an event capable of uniting expert athletes and families, in the spirit of conviviality and respect for the mountains. The flexible format, without rankings or timing, allows everyone to experience the day at their own pace, immersed in one of the most spectacular landscapes in South Tyrol.
