St. Joseph's bonfires light up spring in the historic center of Noicàttaro
The St. Joseph's Bonfires are the first major event of the Noicàttaro Fire Rituals, a cycle of celebrations that every year in Noicàttaro (Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia) links the feast of St. Joseph to Holy Week. At nightfall, in the heart of the historic center, large bonfires are lit and blessed, around which the community gathers to bid farewell to winter and welcome the arrival of spring. It is a popular and religious tradition, composed of prayer, song, shared food, and collective memory.
The rite is rooted in peasant civilization: as documented by local historian Tagarelli, numerous fires were lit along the town streets on St. Joseph's Day, before modern paving changed the face of the village. Due to its identity value, in 2021 the Puglia Region inscribed the Noicàttaro Fire Rituals in the Regional Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage (L.R. n. 1/2018). Fire takes on a profound symbolic meaning here: a force of purification and renewal that, in a religious reading, recalls the Holy Spirit burning away selfishness and misery to regenerate individuals and the community.
The highlight of the evening is March 18th, the eve of the feast of St. Joseph. After the Solemn Holy Mass in the Mother Church, the first fire is lit and blessed on Via Madre Chiesa, in the presence of civil and religious authorities. Other fires are lit in the streets and squares of the village — from Largo Sacro Cuore to the alleys of the old town — becoming meeting points for families, confraternities, and visitors.
A street festival comes to life around the flames: bands and folk music groups, street artist performances and fire jugglers, and storytelling workshops for children. There is no shortage of traditional gastronomy, with stands offering typical Noicàttaro and Apulian dishes in a convivial atmosphere that lasts until late at night.
In recent years, the event has taken on an international dimension thanks to twinning with communities in Albania and Spain: the March bonfire thus intertwines with Albanian celebrations for the arrival of spring, with dances, music, and cuisine from different traditions. Organized by the Oratorio della Pace – Circolo ANSPI, the Noicàttaro Fire Rituals continue in spring with the Easter bonfires of Holy Thursday and Good Friday, when the great fire is lit at the church of Madonna della Lama. All events have free admission.
The 2026 Noicàttaro Fire Rituals kicked off with the St. Joseph's Bonfires, from March 14th to 18th. The highlight was Wednesday, March 18th: at 6:00 PM, the Solemn Holy Mass in the Mother Church, at 7:30 PM the lighting of the fire on Via Madre Chiesa, followed by entertainment with street performers. The band Storie del Vecchio Sud and the Albanian duo Ekland Hasa – Meli Hajderaj performed on stage, highlighting the twinning with the Albanian tradition of spring's arrival. There was no shortage of stands with typical Noicàttaro and Apulian dishes. As per tradition, the event opened the cycle that continues with the Easter bonfires of Holy Thursday and Good Friday (April 2-4, 2026). All events were free to attend.
