An evening of history, legends, and solstice rituals at the Castello Dentice di Frasso
On the night between June 23rd and 24th, ancient rituals linked to the summer solstice and the figure of St. John the Baptist are renewed throughout Italy. In Carovigno, a town in the province of Brindisi overlooking the Itria Valley and just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast, this recurrence finds its ideal setting at the Castello Dentice di Frasso, where every June 23rd the Le Colonne Association organizes an evening dedicated to discovering the festival through history, legends, and popular traditions.
A symbol of Carovigno, the manor dominates the historic center with its imposing structure. The evening kicks off with a guided tour that takes participants on a journey through the monument's evolution: from a medieval fortress to a prestigious noble residence, the castle tells centuries of Apulian history through its halls, walkways, and tower. Experiencing these spaces at dusk, in the intimate atmosphere of St. John's Night, adds a unique charm to the experience.
The cultural heart of the event is the meeting «The Feast of St. John between history and legend», a journey through the symbols, beliefs, and tales that have characterized one of the most deeply felt celebrations in Italian folk culture for centuries. Magical herbs gathered on the «witches' night», St. John's water, propitiatory bonfires, and omens linked to the dawn of June 24th: the rural tradition of the South intertwines here with religious worship and the reading of the summer sky, so much so that in some editions the evening has also included moments of astronomical observation dedicated to the moon and celestial bodies visible at this time of year.
St. John's Night effectively opens the castle's summer season, becoming part of the «Estate in arte» (Artistic Summer) program and the «Summer Evenings at the Castle» schedule promoted by the Le Colonne Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Carovigno. Throughout July, August, and September, the manor offers exhibitions, themed night tours, and events designed for families, confirming the role of the Castello Dentice di Frasso as the city's main cultural hub.
Admission to the evening is by reservation, managed by the Le Colonne Association. A simple and evocative opportunity to rediscover, in the town of Carovigno and the wider context of Salento and Puglia, the meaning of one of the most magical nights in the popular calendar.
For the 2026 edition, St. John's Night at the Castle of Carovigno took place on Tuesday, June 23rd, confirming the appointment on the traditional date of the solstice. The evening, curated by the Le Colonne Association with the Municipality of Carovigno, offered participants a tour of the Castello Dentice di Frasso in an evocative evening atmosphere and an in-depth look at the popular traditions linked to St. John. The initiative marked the start of the manor's summer season and the «Estate in arte» program.
Carovigno is located in the province of Brindisi, along the SS16 Adriatica road. By car, it can be reached from the Carovigno exit of the SS379 (Bari-Brindisi); the Carovigno train station is served by the Adriatic line. The Castello Dentice di Frasso is located in the town's historic center.
The evening of June 23rd generally takes place in the early evening; in recent editions, the guided tour has started at 6:00 PM, followed at 7:30 PM by the meeting dedicated to the feast of St. John.
