The bonfire has its roots in ancient summer solstice celebrations, linked to sun worship and agricultural rhythms, which later merged into the Christian feast of the birth of St. John the Baptist, which the Church places exactly six months before that of Jesus. According to popular belief, the fire on St. John's night has purifying and propitiatory powers: people would pass through the smoke to ward off illness, jump over the flames to banish the year's misfortunes, and observe the ashes the following morning. In Arpino, this heritage of rituals and legends survives in the communal and festive form of the Colle bonfire.

The Colle pasta feast and the festival's gastronomy

Alongside the fire, the absolute star is the gastronomy. The women of the Colle district prepare the famous spaghettata (pasta feast), which is offered to those present and enjoyed on the steps of Sant'Andrea. There is no shortage of arrosticini, sandwiches, traditional desserts, excellent local wine, and ice-cold beer, while musical entertainment accompanies the evening with dancing and cheer. It is an authentic, free, and participatory popular festival that combines the pleasure of dining with the charm of the ritual.
