Spring flavors and wild asparagus in the village of Santopadre, in the Ciociaria region
The Spring Festival and Wild Asparagus Festival brings Santopadre to life every April. This small stone village, perched at an altitude of approximately 750 meters in the province of Frosinone, southern Lazio, hosts the event to celebrate the awakening of nature and one of the most iconic products of the Ciociaria region: wild asparagus, which grows spontaneously in the woods and mountainous areas surrounding the town. For an entire Sunday, Piazza Marconi transforms into a meeting point of tradition, nature, and conviviality, with a program designed for all ages.
The heart of the festival is the food stand managed by the Pro Loco, where you can taste the signature dishes of Santopadre cuisine. Three specialties not to be missed:
The dishes are accompanied by sausage and porchetta sandwiches, wine, and beer: simple, genuine cuisine that tells the story of a peasant tradition passed down through generations.
Among the most anticipated activities is the nature walk along the San Benedetto trail, a moderately difficult route that crosses the rolling hills and woods around the village, ideal for appreciating the spring rebirth of the vegetation. Accompanied by expert guides, participants discover wild asparagus, medicinal herbs, local fauna, and history. The meeting point is Piazza Marconi early in the morning, with a return to the square in the late morning, just in time for the opening of the food stand; the modest participation fee, which includes breakfast, is donated to charity.
Throughout the day, the center of the village hosts the craft, antique, and collectibles market organized in collaboration with the Associazione Conca d'Oro, featuring exhibitors from across the region. Car enthusiasts can enjoy the classic and sports car gathering held with RoD โ Republic of Drivers, enriched by a free Sound Competition with prizes. It is an unusual and successful mix that combines the flavors of the festival with the charm of vintage cars and stalls from days gone by.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most authentic villages in Ciociaria: narrow alleys, arches, stone houses, circular towers of the ancient walls, and panoramic views stretching over hills covered in vineyards and olive groves, not far from the Gole del Melfa. Santopadre also preserves traces of the Roman era and a strong rural identity that the festival aims to enhance, promoting slow and sustainable tourism in the greener and lesser-known part of the Lazio Region.
Reaching its second edition in 2026, the Spring Festival and Wild Asparagus Festival has already become a fixed appointment in the Ciociaria spring calendar, attracting visitors from all over the province of Frosinone and the nearby Cassino area. Admission to the festival is free: another reason to treat yourself to a Sunday of taste and nature on one of the panoramic balconies of Ciociaria.
The Spring Festival and Wild Asparagus Festival returned to Santopadre on Sunday, April 19, 2026, for its second edition, with a program running from morning to evening between Piazza Guglielmo Marconi and the village trails. The day opened with the nature walk on the San Benedetto trail, a moderately difficult route through woods and hilly landscapes, and continued with the Pro Loco food stand, where wild asparagus specialties triumphed. Throughout the day, the historic center hosted the craft, antique, and collectibles market curated with the Associazione Conca d'Oro and the classic and sports car gathering organized with RoD โ Republic of Drivers, complemented by a free Sound Competition with prizes. A festive Sunday that confirmed the winning formula of the first edition: nature, motors, market, and authentic flavors of Ciociaria.
By car: from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, take the Ceprano or Pontecorvo/Castrocielo exits, then follow the signs for Arpino and Santopadre along the provincial roads. Parking is available near the town center.
By train: the nearest station is Roccasecca, on the Rome-Cassino line, about 10 km from the village; from there, it is advisable to continue by taxi or private vehicle.
Admission to the festival is free. The nature walk on the San Benedetto trail requires a small participation fee (5 โฌ in recent editions, breakfast included) with reservations recommended at +39 366 9351437.
For the walk, trekking shoes and layered clothing are recommended: the route is of medium difficulty. The food stand opens in the late morning; during peak hours, it is best to arrive early.
