The Christmas festival of medieval music, bagpipes, and tradition
Spello Splendens is the festival that during the Christmas period brings medieval and traditional music to Spello (province of Perugia). Through concerts, exhibitions, conferences, lessons, and workshops, musicians from various parts of Italy present the great variety of this sound heritage: instruments, repertoires, stories, and songs in dialogue between the music of medieval codices and oral traditions, Italian and European.
The festival particularly values the sound of ancient instruments such as bagpipes, ciaramelle, and cornemuses, which at Christmas time played an important role in announcing the rite and the feast. The concerts offer rare and fascinating listening experiences, often little known to the general public, highlighting a musical heritage of extraordinary richness.
The event is proposed by the Adolfo Broegg European Centre for Medieval Music Studies in Spello, curated by the Micrologus Musical Association with artistic direction by Goffredo Degli Esposti and Gabriele Russo, in collaboration with the Culture Department of the Municipality of Spello. The concerts take place in evocative locations in the historic center such as the Subasio Theatre, the Church of Sant'Andrea, and the Auditorium of the Study Centre.
The Christmas edition of Spello Splendens took place between Sunday, December 28, 2025, and the weekend of January 2-4, 2026. The festival featured concerts of medieval and traditional music dedicated to Christmas, with the characteristic sound of bagpipes, ciaramelle, and cornemuses.
The various events were held in the most evocative locations of the village: the Subasio Theatre, the Church of Sant'Andrea, and the Auditorium of the Adolfo Broegg Study Centre. Alongside the concerts, lessons and workshops explored instruments and repertoires from the medieval musical heritage and European oral traditions.
