The summer festival of the Volunteer Fire Department of Valdaora di Sopra, the heart of the Ferragosto celebrations in the Puster Valley
The Sommerfest der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Oberolang is the annual summer festival organized by the Volunteer Fire Department of Valdaora di Sopra (Oberolang in German), one of the three hamlets that make up the municipality of Valdaora/Olang, in the Province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Puster Valley in Trentino-Alto Adige. It is an event deeply rooted in village life, traditionally revolving around the Assumption of Mary (Ferragosto, August 15th), one of the most significant dates in the South Tyrolean calendar.
Like many Volunteer Fire Department festivals in South Tyrol, the Oberolang Sommerfest is much more than a simple fair: it is a moment when the entire community gathers to support the fire brigade, a pillar of village life, and to celebrate the mountain summer together. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr sets up the marquee and the festival grounds, while volunteers handle the cooking, service, and hospitality. Proceeds contribute to the corps' operations and equipment.
The typical program for these Puster Valley summer festivals includes performances by local brass bands (Musikkapelle and traditional music groups), a friendly and convivial atmosphere, and a rich selection of South Tyrolean specialties: from traditional Tyrolean dishes to local desserts, accompanied by fresh draft beer and regional wines. It is the ideal opportunity to experience authentic South Tyrolean hospitality, where tradition and faith remain an integral part of daily life.
The festival is held in Valdaora di Sopra/Oberolang, at the foot of the Plan de Corones ski area, in a privileged position among the meadows and mountains of the Puster Valley. Valdaora is a renowned summer and winter tourist destination, and the Sommerfest represents one of the highlights of the village summer, attracting both residents and vacationers in a genuine festive spirit.
The Sommerfest der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Oberolang 2026 will be held on Friday, August 14th and Saturday, August 15th in Valdaora di Sopra/Oberolang, coinciding with the Assumption of Mary. The dates have been confirmed by the Volunteer Fire Department of Oberolang.
As per tradition, the festival will feature live music from local brass bands, a convivial atmosphere under the marquee, and a wide range of South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties, including draft beer and local products. Proceeds support the activities of the volunteer fire brigade.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition (times, guest musical groups, menu) has not yet been published: it will be announced by the Fire Department and the Valdaora tourist office in the weeks preceding the event.
