The Easter Monday walk on the Bregoli path towards San Luca
The "So e Zo par i Bregual" walk โ in Italian "Su e giรน per i Bregoli" โ is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Casalecchio di Reno, in the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna. It takes place every year on Easter Monday (Pasquetta) and accompanies dozens of participants along the historic Bregoli path, from the plains up to the Guardia hill.
The name comes from an old Bolognese saying: "andรจr so e zo pr i bregual", meaning to go up and down the Bregoli. Originally, the expression referred to the romantic strolls of Bolognese couples along the route connecting Casalecchio to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. Over time, this custom has transformed into a collective moment: an opportunity to come together as a community and rediscover the values of Easter, sharing local foods and old tales.
The Bregoli Path (classified CAI 112/A) starts from the Church of San Martino, on the edge of the Parco della Chiusa, and climbs for about 1.7 km to the Basilica of San Luca. It is a scenic but challenging route due to its inclines, frequented year-round by hikers, runners, cyclists, and pilgrims. Along the way, you'll find views of the city and hills, a World War II air-raid shelter, and Pietrabregoli, the panoramic viewpoint installed in 2011 facing the Pliocene Contrafforte.
Participation is free and open to all, and the route includes more accessible variants. "So e Zo par i Bregual" is organized by Pro Loco Casalecchio Insieme with the patronage of the Municipality, combining the sporting and naturalistic dimensions with the popular and religious identity of an outdoor Easter Monday, on the Bolognese hills.
The traditional walk of Casalecchio di Reno returned on Monday, April 6, 2026, Easter Monday. The day, organized by Pro Loco Casalecchio Insieme, followed the usual schedule: gathering from 8:30 AM at the Church of San Martino, departure at 9:00 AM with the Easter blessing, stop and group photo at Pietrabregoli around 10:00 AM, and a refreshment point mid-route by Polisportiva G. Masi. Upon return, around 11:00 AM, the typical snack with bread, eggs, salami, and Pignoletto. Free and open participation.
Casalecchio di Reno is less than 10 km from Bologna. By car, you can reach it from the ring road (Casalecchio exits); by train with suburban lines SFM to Casalecchio stations. The meeting point is at the Church of San Martino, in Via dei Bregoli 1.
Wear trekking or sports shoes suitable for hilly trails: the CAI 112/A route has challenging inclines. Bring water and layered clothing. Participation is free; more accessible variants of the route are available.
