The gastronomic snail festival in the heart of Bellante Paese
In the village of Bellante Paese, in the province of Teramo, nestled in the rolling hills of Abruzzo, the Snail Festival has become one of the region's most deeply rooted summer traditions. Established in 2010 and organized by the Pro Loco Bellante APS, the festival transforms Piazza Mazzini into a vibrant hub of celebration for a full week in early August, drawing visitors from across the valley and neighboring provinces.
The undisputed star is the land snail, one of the oldest staples of rural tradition, rediscovered and celebrated here through recipes rooted in Abruzzo's humble peasant cuisine. The festival menu is extensive, offering the chance to taste snails in all their forms:
Alongside the snail-based dishes, the stalls also offer local specialties such as pennette alla bellantese, arrosticini, sausage sandwiches, fried cheese, and classic fried snacks, all paired with wine and beer.
The Snail Festival is not just a culinary event. Every evening, Piazza Mazzini fills with music, ranging from rock and folk to traditional dances for all generations. There is no shortage of shows, entertainment, and a dedicated children's workshop active every night, making the event perfect for families. Over the years, the festival has expanded its program to include cultural meetings and book presentations, broadening its appeal beyond the dining table.
The event is part of the calendar of initiatives promoted by the Pro Loco Bellante, which has been active for over twenty years in enhancing the Municipality of Bellante and its traditions, alongside other events like Jazz in Pineta and the Chestnut and Polenta Festival. However, the Snail Festival remains the highlight of the Bellante summer, successfully blending gastronomic identity, social spirit, and the promotion of the village.
The 2026 edition of the Snail Festival will be held in Bellante Paese (Teramo) from August 1st to 7th, as confirmed by the Pro Loco Bellante, which includes it alongside Jazz in Pineta as one of the summer 2026 events. The heart of the festival remains Piazza Mazzini, with food stalls open every evening from 7:00 PM.
As per tradition, a rich snail-based menu is expected—from tagliatelle with sauce to stewed and fried snails—alongside local specialties, as well as music, shows, and workshops for children. The complete program with musical dates and guests has not yet been released and will be published by the Pro Loco Bellante closer to the event.
The festival takes place in Piazza Mazzini, in the historic center of Bellante Paese (postal code 64020), in the province of Teramo.
By car, Bellante can be reached from the Mosciano Sant'Angelo motorway exit (A14) or from Giulianova, continuing inland along the provincial roads. The nearest train station is in Giulianova, on the Adriatic line, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
Food stalls open every evening at 7:00 PM. Entry to the festival area is free; you pay for what you consume at the various stalls. For updates on dates and the program, you can check the Facebook page of the Snail Festival or the Pro Loco Bellante.
