About Sipario d'Oro

Sipario d'Oro is the National Amateur Theatre Festival of Vallagarina, one of the longest-running and most acclaimed events in the Trentino region. Every year, between February and March, forty-five performances light up fifteen theatres across the valley, including the Teatro Monte Baldo in Brentonico. The heart of the event is the National Competition, which brings Italy's finest amateur companies to Rovereto, complemented by a rich local circuit dedicated to popular Trentino theatre.

Sipario d'Oro, the grand amateur theatre festival

Sipario d'Oro is the National Amateur Theatre Festival of Vallagarina, organized by the historic Compagnia di Lizzana "Paolo Manfrini" with the support of the Vallagarina Community and the Autonomous Region of Trentino-Alto Adige. Established in 1982, it is now one of Italy's most significant and enduring amateur theatre festivals: every year, it offers forty-five evenings of performances spread across fifteen theatres in eleven municipalities of the valley, attracting thousands of spectators and hundreds of subscribers.

The Brentonico stop at Teatro Monte Baldo

The Municipality of Brentonico, nestled on the plateau of the same name at the foot of Monte Baldo in the province of Trento, is one of the permanent venues for the Sipario d'Oro circuit. The scheduled performances are held at the Teatro comunale Monte Baldo on Via Roma, the hub of the town's cultural life. Here, the audience meets both local amateur companies and guest troupes from all over Italy, with evening shows ranging from dialect comedy to classic repertoire.

National Competition and local circuit

The event is divided into two main sections. The National Competition, held at the Teatro Zandonai in Rovereto and the Teatro San Floriano in Lizzana, pits the best amateur companies—selected from over a hundred applications from across the peninsula—against one another. The local circuit completes the program with dozens of performances in the theatres of the Vallagarina municipalities—including Brentonico, Ala, Isera, Volano, Trambileno, Serravalle, Pomarolo, and others—showcasing popular theatre and local Trentino companies.

A quality jury and focus on youth

The competition performances are evaluated by a technical jury alongside a youth jury, composed of high school students from the area: a way to introduce new generations to live theatre, with discounted entry for students.

A staple of Trentino-Alto Adige

With its long history, Sipario d'Oro has become a defining cultural event for Vallagarina and the entire Trentino-Alto Adige region. For Brentonico, it represents an opportunity to open its theatre to the festival's extensive network and bring the best of Italian amateur theatre to the stage, just a stone's throw from the Dolomites.

Sipario d'Oro — edition 2026

The 45th edition of Sipario d'Oro took place from February 13 to March 27, 2026, featuring forty-five evenings across fifteen theatres in Vallagarina. The local circuit also reached the Teatro Monte Baldo in Brentonico, while the National Competition brought eight of Italy's best amateur companies to the Teatro Zandonai in Rovereto and the Teatro San Floriano in Lizzana.
