Float parades, masquerades, and dance parties in the Nebrodi Mountains
The Sinagra Carnival is the main festive appointment in Sinagra, a charming town in the province of Messina set amongst the Nebrodi Mountains, along the banks of the Naso stream and surrounded by hazelnut, olive, and chestnut groves. For a few weeks in February, this small Sicilian town transforms into a vibrant street party, featuring allegorical floats, colorful masks, and an entire community gathering in the main square.
The festival is affectionately known as the "Carnevale du Zu Turi", named after Salvatore Mosรจ, a historic figure of the Sinagra Carnival who for many years enlivened the festivities with his humor, pranks, and generosity. To this day, the tradition is upheld by the Mosรจ family and their friends with the same passion as in the past, and one of the most cherished rituals remains the famous shower of fried meatballs distributed to the crowd.
The heart of the festival lies in the parades of allegorical floats: works carefully crafted by local artisans which, accompanied by masked groups, wind through the town center in a long procession. The route culminates in the square, which turns into a large open-air dance floor. At the end of the parades, the awards ceremony for the floats and participating groups takes place, a moment highly anticipated by the community.
Accompanying the Carnival days is a rich program of dance parties in the market area, animated by local bands and orchestras with live music until late at night. These evenings, which are free and open to everyone, are one of the hallmarks of the event and help make the Sinagra Carnival a powerful moment of social cohesion.
Organized by the S.N.M. Association - Sinagra Nuovo Millennio together with the Municipality of Sinagra and with the invaluable support of volunteers, the Civil Protection, and local associations like Project X, the Sinagra Carnival demonstrates how, even in small towns, the power of collective effort can transform a traditional festival into an event capable of attracting visitors from all the surrounding Nebrodi towns.
The 2026 Sinagra Carnival kicked off on Saturday, February 7th, with the first dance party in the market area, featuring the Senza Regole Live Band starting at 9:30 PM. The program continued with further dance evenings and the allegorical float parades originally scheduled for Sunday the 15th and Tuesday the 17th of February.
Due to adverse weather conditions, the traditional main parade of allegorical floats was rescheduled and postponed to Sunday, February 22nd, 2026. The evenings were enlivened not only by the Senza Regole Live Band but also by the Orchestra dei Nebrodi, ensuring music, color, and masks until late at night. Among the most heartfelt moments were the spaghetti dinner offered by the association and the awards ceremony for the participating floats and groups.
The work of the young members of the S.N.M. - Sinagra Nuovo Millennio association and the Project X association, in collaboration with the Municipality led by Mayor Nino Musca, was decisive. The outcome of the edition was considered highly positive, with a large turnout in the market area and visitors from neighboring Nebrodi towns.
The events take place in the historic center of Sinagra (ME) and in the market area for the dance parties. Sinagra is located in the Nebrodi Mountains, at an altitude of approximately 260 meters.
By car: from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the Brolo-Capo d'Orlando exit, then follow local roads into the Nebrodi interior. By train: the nearest station is Brolo-Ficarra-Piraino on the Tyrrhenian line, then continue by car or bus.
The float parades and dance parties are free to attend.
