Grilled sheep and bobbin lace on Saint Irene's days
Every year, on September 2nd and 3rd, the village of Tavenna, in the Province of Campobasso, dedicates a festival to sheep meat, an iconic dish of the pastoral tradition of Basso Molise. The event takes place concurrently with the feast of Saint Irene and offers tastings of local specialties prepared according to recipes passed down by Tavenna families.
The festival is complemented by the Craft Exhibition, a showcase of the village's traditional works. The stars are the renowned bobbin lace, a very fine textile craft that Tavenna preserves a living tradition of, displayed alongside other local craft products.
The two days of celebration, organized by the Pro Loco of Tavenna, are enriched by music and folk dances that liven up the historic center. The festival is an opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavors and crafts of a village with a Croatian-Molise linguistic minority, a guardian of a unique culture in the landscape of the Molise Region.
The Sheep Meat Festival of Sant'Irene returns to Tavenna on September 2nd and 3rd, 2026. For two days, the historic center comes alive with tastings of sheep meat specialties, the Craft Exhibition featuring bobbin lace, music, and folk dances, coinciding with the feast of Saint Irene.
Detailed hourly program will be announced by the Pro Loco of Tavenna closer to the event.
Tavenna can be reached by car from the SS650 Fondovalle Trigno and from the provincial roads of Basso Molise, in the Province of Campobasso. The festival takes place on September 2nd and 3rd in the historic center of the village. For schedules and details, please refer to the Pro Loco of Tavenna.
