The sweetest honey market exhibition in Abruzzo, held in the village known as the capital of beekeeping.
Tornareccio Queen of Honey is the most important food and wine event in Abruzzo dedicated to honey and hive products. Every year, on the penultimate weekend of September, the historic center of the small town of Tornareccio, in the province of Chieti, comes alive with a vast market exhibition that attracts producers, food lovers, and curious visitors from across the region and beyond. Nestled on the slopes of Monte Pallano, Tornareccio is known as the Abruzzo capital of honey: here, beekeeping is a true vocation, involving hives transported to high-mountain blooms and production methods that reject pasteurization to preserve all the product's natural properties.
During the event, the alleys and squares of the village are filled with beekeepers' stalls, opening their doors to the public in a widespread fair. The absolute star is mountain honey in its many varieties: wildflower, sulla, sainfoin, sunflower, savory, and acacia, each with distinct aromas and nuances. Alongside the honey, there is space for typical local products, from cheeses to preserves, and from pastries to Abruzzo gastronomic specialties.
The institutional heart of the festival is the national competition Tre Gocce d'Oro โ Grandi Mieli d'Italia (Three Golden Drops โ Great Honeys of Italy), promoted by the National Honey Observatory, which rewards the best productions in the country every year: Abruzzo, and Tornareccio in particular, consistently ranks among the most awarded regions. The program is enriched with guided tastings, children's workshops, book presentations, meetings with veteran beekeepers, cooking shows, and musical performances. There are also references to the town's artistic tradition, which is also famous for the artistic mosaics that decorate the village facades.
Tornareccio is a founding member of the national association Le Cittร del Miele and hosts the event as part of the national Andar per Miele calendar. The festival is much more than a simple fair: it is the story of a community that has made beekeeping its identity, through the enhancement of the Monte Pallano landscape, the care for bees, and the promotion of slow and authentic tourism in the Abruzzo hinterland. An unmissable stop for those who want to discover the flavors and traditions of the Abruzzo Region.
On September 27, 2026, Tornareccio celebrates a special milestone: the 20th anniversary of Queen of Honey, the sweetest event in Abruzzo. The date is already confirmed within the national Andar per Miele calendar promoted by the Le Cittร del Miele association.
As per tradition, the historic center of the Municipality of Tornareccio, in the province of Chieti, will host the large market exhibition with mountain honeys from the area, from sulla to sainfoin, from sunflower to savory, accompanied by typical Abruzzo products. The complete program with guests, workshops, tastings, and cultural appointments will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Tornareccio is located in the province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo hinterland. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro exit) by continuing along the Fondovalle Sangro, or from the A25. The nearest train stations are on the Adriatic coast, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
Admission to the market exhibition is free. The stalls in the historic center are generally open from morning until late evening. Tastings and some workshops may require a small fee.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to navigate the village alleys and planning to park in the areas outside the historic center, which is closed to traffic during the event.
