On foot from Assisi to Gubbio in the footsteps of Saint Francis, in the 800th anniversary year
The Sentiero di Francesco (Path of Francis) is the pilgrimage on foot that, as part of the 'Gubbio 2026. In the Sign of Francis' program, connects Assisi to Gubbio (Province of Perugia), two fundamental cities in the story of Saint Francis of Assisi. It is held in the year of the 800th anniversary of the saint's death (1226-2026), organized by the Diocese of Gubbio.
The three-day itinerary retraces the ideal path taken by the young Francis between 1206 and 1207, when he went to Gubbio. The route runs from Assisi to Valfabbrica and finally to Gubbio, crossing the Umbrian hilly landscape that forms the backdrop to the origins of Franciscanism.
The pilgrimage is dedicated to the Canticle of the Creatures and to the themes dear to Franciscan spirituality: peace, fraternity, and care for creation. The arrival in Gubbio, the city of the famous encounter between Francis and the wolf, gives the walk a particularly strong symbolic meaning, as part of the wider centenary celebrations.
The Sentiero di Francesco 2026 takes place from September 1st to 3rd as a three-day pilgrimage on foot from Assisi to Gubbio, with an intermediate stop in Valfabbrica. The initiative is part of the 'Gubbio 2026. In the Sign of Francis' program and commemorates the journey made by Francis between 1206 and 1207.
Organized by the Diocese of Gubbio, the pilgrimage is dedicated to the Canticle of the Creatures and the values of Franciscan spirituality: peace, reconciliation, and care for creation. The arrival in Gubbio, the city of the encounter with the wolf, symbolically concludes the journey in the centenary year.
